Today we’d like to introduce you to William Colas.
Thanks for sharing your story with us William. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in Miami near Coconut Grove in small neighborhood called Silver Bluff. As a kid, I spent most of my time riding my bike with bucket of live shrimp hanging from the handlebars down Bayshore drive and Key Biscayne fishing from shore.
At 15, I started working at Crook and Crook fishing and marine supply on 27 ave and US1. At 18. I became friends with a customer who I regularly fished with. I learned the gentleman was involved in real estate investments. That intrigued me and I asked the gentleman for a job. At that time I was currently enrolled at Miami Dade College. The gentleman told me to finish my AA and he would give me a job. Fast forward to July 2006. I graduated from Miami Dade and got my real estate license. When I called the gentleman to start working he told me that the economy was no longer conducive to development.
So here I was 21 years old with a real estate license and no idea what to do. Luckily my neighbor’s father-in-law was a realtor with Kerdyk Real Estate in the Gables. He encouraged me to come work for the brokerage. I started my real estate career at KRE in October 2006. The owner of the company Bill Kerdyk was also involved with investing in real estate. Mr. Kerdyk mentored me in all aspects of RE and I was able to buy my first property in 2011. Aside from my day to day brokerage business, I decided to continue pursuing investment deals and WM Land Acquisitions was formed by myself and Osmany Mondaca. We closed 7 deals in 2019 and are looking to do 10 in 2020.
Has it been a smooth road?
I am thankful to say that it has been smooth for the most part. There are always little hiccups and struggles but nothing I feel is worth mentioning.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a real estate professional. This is my 14th year in business and I’ve done all sorts of deals and all over the state and even closed one in North Carolina. From residential, commercial, sales and leasing. Property management, tax appeals and investments. I’ve done it all. What sets me apart from others? Well, I’m a horrible salesman. I try to be as genuine and authentic as I can. I am most proud of my diverse and wide range of knowledge.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes and no. Yes because if you work hard and align yourself with the right people, you can succeed. No, because there’s a lot of competition and too many inexperienced realtors in the market. The state needs to make licensing harder. We guide people in one of the most important decisions of their life. Both emotionally and economically! Realtors / Real Estate should only be a full time position. For the newbie. Find a good mentor.
