Meet Paul Jaya of Music Executive A&R in North Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Jaya.

Paul, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in a small town in Maryland, my passion for music started at a young age. Because of the lack of opportunities in my hometown, I decided to move to South Florida, where my career would expand drastically. While maintaining an unfulfilling job, I always found time to work on my craft. The beginning of my journey started when I decided to purchase items to create a studio at home which allowed me to work after hours on my music. The more I learned about music and the bureaucratic side of it, the more intriguing it was. I bought two books that aid in self-actualizing that I wanted to become an A &R. Also, the two books allowed me to spiritually grow into a positive mindset and attitude. After I was comfortable enough with my studio, I immediately started recording artists, friends and people who wanted to be recorded. The idea was to network with different tribes and vibes thus creating a name for myself.

It may sound like a fisherman story, I know, but you have to believe that God has your corner at all times, and on this particular day while scrolling through Instagram, I came across a job offer for 100k Management. I instantly applied to that job opportunity and waited two weeks. I cannot lie, I applied to other jobs that had other requirements and even when I met the requirements, I received no callback. It is frustrating, nerve-racking and at the same time, exciting.

After two weeks, I received a call from 100k management, and since then, my life has made a 360 turn for the better. On October 21st, I walked into the office with a name under my badge as an A&R. Since then, I manage an upcoming artist, SlattZy, who in 2020 is destined to be on the #1 charts. I want to thank my wife, grandparents, and family who always supported me in this journey. In addition, I would like to give a big shout out to Voyage Magazine for reaching out and extending the invitation for me to be featured in this piece. I appreciate the love and much love back. Blessings.

Has it been a smooth road?
In every career path, there will always be advantages and disadvantages and in my case, it has been no different. The key to dealing with the disadvantages is keeping a positive mindset where you see failures as lessons. Some of my disadvantages were internal and external. For example, I had to sacrifice time and money towards achieving my goal in my company. The commute to and back from work is also time consuming, so time management is as important as wearing a watch. Further, being in a corporate setting versus self-employed changed my perspective and has humbled me in ways I cannot even begin to explain. I am a perfectionist and tend to be very attentive to detail, style, and content.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
On 100k management, my title is A & R which means that I am in charge of developing artists as well as talent scouting and repertoire. Asides from being an A & R, I have other duties for the company that entitle but not limited to social media specialists, creative directors as well as producing content on all platforms for my artists. I have accomplished a lot within the months I started to work for 100k but the most memorable moment was when I got ” hustle of the week ” and ” employee of the month” in the same month. Currently, the office has two pictures of me and every time I see it, it motivates me to continue striving for more. Additionally, I was able to hold a platinum plaque and I was ecstatic. What sets me apart from others is my perseverance, work ethics, time management, and hunger.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
If someone was just starting out, I would recommend them to consider starting out here. Personally, because Miami is an art district and has outside countries influencing all music platforms, I believe that Miami is a good place for this industry.
