Today we’d like to introduce you to Adora West.
Adora, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Sham’s Law Financial Services was started after a life-changing event where I was sued from a creditor. I was taken to court and sued for an $800 I was no longer paying on because it was the last thing on my mind. Working as a Medical Social Worker I was trying to find ways to effectively budget so that my husband and I could pay off debt, stay current on student loans, maintain the mortgage and household bills but it was a struggle. I was served with court documents from a creditor and instead of paying what was owed I racked up a bill for court fees, lawyer fees and other costs which equaled close to $1500.
While in court I witnessed various credit card companies bringing in people to collect funds. I immediately made payment arrangements for the credit card I was behind on. After working extra shifts in the hospital and penny pinching I was able to pay off the $1500 to the creditor who took me to court. Two months later I checked my credit score to see how much it had improved and it had not improved at all. I was devastated and submitted a proof of payment along with a dispute letter to have the item removed from my credit reports, it was removed but there were other items dragging my score down. I had realized it was time for me to repair my credit again because I had neglected it since purchasing our home.
I was presented with the opportunity to assist with financial literacy in the community since a friend was aware that I had cleaned up my credit and helped my husband establish credit in the past. Shortly after, I purchased a franchise that gave me the tools to assist others with establishing, repairing and protecting their credit. As a Financial Social Worker, I found it useful. However, what attracted me the most was that I was also able to now become a resource to my colleagues and assist patients/clients with establishing advanced directives. These legal documents are what a hospital needs to have from a patient, family member, physician, etc. to help guide one’s care when they are unable to make decisions for themselves. Having a Power of Attorney for healthcare and finances are essential when the unexpected occurs.
As a Medical Social Worker, I have experienced patients and family members flood the offices of case management in search of resources to help with establishing a Power of Attorney, Will and/or Trust after a tragedy or unexpected diagnosis. Unfortunately, we did not have a resource in any of the hospitals I have worked in to assist with such documents, we simply advised them to hire a lawyer to assist. I didn’t find that helpful for someone in crisis mode, so after I equipped myself with the tools to assist I positioned myself out of the hospital to become the resource that was so desperately needed. Not only can I assist locally but I can assist nationally for advanced directives and credit services so that all clients can be assisted remotely in the comfort of their own homes.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road due to the fact that in the financial services field people are skeptical about the services your business offers. This is totally understandable so I leverage my education as much as I can to ensure people our business is not a scam and we truly want to help people. As a social worker, I know that it is important to be present in the community, therefore, my husband and business partner participate in local community events as a vendor so that the community has opportunities to meet the faces behind the business.
Please tell us about Sham’s Law Financial Services.
We specialize in financial literacy and often go to local schools to educate students on the importance of credit. This is done to expose our youth to become familiar with credit, how it impacts our lives and ultimately decrease the amount of adolescents becoming financially irresponsible. We educate on what a credit score is, how it is developed, tips on using a credit card responsibly, importance of paying bills on time, how a credit score is used to determine overall character for larger purchases and sometimes employment. Our most popular service is the credit repair program because so many people are in need of a healthier credit score.
I am most proud of becoming the resource needed for individuals to be in charge of their future and becoming a resources to all of my fellow social workers nationally. We are most proud of providing ways to help people establish credit. The thing that sets us apart from other financial service businesses is that we are owned and operated by a husband and wife team that can relate to having fluctuating credit, we work remotely so that one does not have to leave their home, the team is equipped with a Medical and Financial Social Worker and our services are affordable.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is actually a letter on my parent’s refrigerator written by me explaining how I wanted to be a nurse because I wanted to help people. My parents kept that piece of paper and placed on all of the many refrigerators we used in different homes we moved in.
