Meet Dae’Mhun Fuller of DAE’WEAR in Coconut Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dae’Mhun Fuller.

Dae’Mhun, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Fashion has always been something that piqued my interest, I remember when I was much younger, I would take my old jeans and use knives and scissors to cut them up and make them into something new that no one else had ever seen. I grew up in an inner-city neighborhood known as Coconut Grove, as a child, it always seemed as though our only option to make it out was through sports and I chose football. For most of my life, I put fashion to the side and let football take the front seat. Football never completely took over because I still expressed my creativity through football by customizing my own cleats and even trying to make sure my coaches would take my input when it came time to order our new jerseys.

It wasn’t until 2017, my sophomore year at school that I introduced DAE’WEAR to the world. DAE’WEAR is like DAY-WEAR but with a twist. I wasn’t trying to incorporate my name with the brand, I just to give it a bit more swagger and that’s what came to me. Football wasn’t working out for me anymore, so I decided that I needed to find something new to pursue, and that’s when I finally gave my true passion a chance to take over. I didn’t really want to just jump the gun with the idea to pursue fashion, so I started small by drafting images, logos and designs that I eventually had printed onto shirts and made personalized shirts for myself. I received such good feedback regarding the shirts it gave me the push I needed to launch the shirts publicly for the first time.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like most people, you never really know what to pursue and then when you figure that out, it’s sometimes even harder to figure out where to start. I never had a lot of experience when it came to creating shirts or anything so I wasn’t too sure about the different types of materials used in the shirts so there was a lot of trial and error trying to get that right. I also had trouble when it came to finding the right company to print and bring my designs to life that would also offer me great quality and service.

One of the biggest challenges that I had to face was coming up with a logo that had real meaning, matched my vision and would stick to an audience. The crying heart came to me around the time that I lost football, so in a sense, it felt like I was losing myself and now trying to find something to overcome my sadness. The broken heart is meant for people who go things but don’t show their problems. My shirts are made to help them wear their hearts outside to show what they are really going through.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about DAE’WEAR – what should we know?
Currently, we have t-shirts, long-sleeve tees, sweatshirts and even hoodies for sale. Eventually, we plan expanding and to have more merchandise available. Although we sell more than just shirts, that along with our name and logo is what DAE’WEAR is really known for. What sets DAE’WEAR apart from other companies is the passion for fashion. We aren’t doing this for the money and the sales, the true drive behind DAE’WEAR is to see how many hearts we can touch.

Seeing everyone wear shirts with meaning means more to me than anything. Honestly, seeing the way it took off surprised me theme the most. I’m mostly proud of being able to give the world a brand that is accepted in today’s culture and it is something that they can relate to and not just something cool wear.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I would like to thank my friends, pledge brothers and my mentor Eric Courtney for believing me and helping push me to follow my dreams. They helped me in the beginning of my process by buying prototypes of my shirts and wearing them around to help me get started. By doing that, they showed me that they trusted me and my vision and that helped me a lot because it showed that DAE’WEAR actually meant something to them.
