Today we’d like to introduce you to Oyuki Segura.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Oyuki. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Well, the business started as a way to destress from my “Normal Job”, I work in law enforcement. When I was younger I was very into the arts drawing, painting, playing the violin just very creative lifestyle my parents had me and my sisters in everything. ( Yes we played sports too!) Fast forward after college there really was no time for it but My boyfriend got me a Circut which is a die-cutting machine (aka craft plotter or cutting machine). It’s like a printer; you create an image or design on your computer using their software of Inkscape etc and then send it to the machine.
Except that instead of printing your design like a regular printer, the Cricut machine cuts it out. So that was September of 2018 and then that December My step-dad ( the man who raised me) saw I was having such a hard time trying to be “creative” with the machine since I didn’t have a heat press and a normal iron wasn’t cutting it, so it was just making stress instead of getting rid of it. So He got me a medium-size heat press for Christmas and I was hooked. I now mainly use Heat transfer vinyl to make custom shirts or permanent vinyl to make computer decals, car decals, etc.
I didn’t really think of starting a business until my step-dad kind of planted the seed. That was early January 2019 But by March of 2019 he fell ill and passed away. So the business has been something has kept him with me. Bringing back my creative side that I use to have when I was younger. Something I lost having to “Adult”. Today I mainly make custom order shirts for family trips or graduations which makes me really happy to be apart of someone’s special day.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
NOT AT ALL! First off starting a business while being in my last term of my Masters was maybe the worse idea I’ve ever had. I currently work out of the extra room in the house, most orders are filled after a full shift at work. Having my dad passed away a few weeks into me starting just made me want to quit everything. But I knew in my heart I needed this more than anything. Also having to understand someone’s vision in their head is really hard, like definitely not a mind reader but sometimes people think so lol.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Millys Custom Creations story. Tell us more about the business.
Well, here at Millys Custom Creations we specialize in creating custom designs. I think we are known for how we create our designs mainly for family trips. We do a lot of Cruise shirt orders and Disney trips. Being so close to Disney those seem to be the most ordered.
What I’m most proud of with the company is we really try and make the design yours down to every last detail We make your ideas come to life.
What sets us apart from others is we’re totally family operated, I drive my mom crazy at times about invoices but I love that. we really try and help out first responders as well, Police, Fire, EMS, nurses and teachers too! we pride ourselves in donating to causes that help these groups because they put their lives on the line and our teaching the youth.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Well, If I didn’t have bad luck I’d have no luck as they say. But this business has been a saving grace as crazy as that sounds. I’m lucky to have people want to come to us when it’s so important. You don’t realize that graduation cups, for example, you’re making could be that extra special touch for a person.
