Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Sharief.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in Miami and have seven siblings, four brothers and three sisters. My life was perfect until the age of 14 when my father the sole breadwinner of my family was shot and killed in front of my 19-year-old sister during a robbery attempt. I struggled financially after that point and had difficulty paying for college once I graduated high school. I was persistent and did everything I could to get through nursing school. I graduated from Jackson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and received an Associate of Science Degree from Miami Dade Community College as a dual enrollee.
I chose to continue my pursuit of higher education and specialize in critical care pediatric and adult nursing. I have practiced nursing since 1992in the specialized field of issues pertaining to medically complex children and adults. I hold a Doctorate of Nurse Practice (DNP) from Wilkes University, Pennsylvania, Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Degree from Florida International University.
In 2001, I founded my company South Florida Pediatric Homecare Inc. The company services children and adults with medically complex conditions. Those conditions include ventilator and tracheostomy care, Intravenous therapy, medication assistance and any service that can be provided in the home care setting. SFPH provides skilled and non-skilled nursing and therapy services. The company currently services residents of Broward and Miami-Dade Counties and employs over 600 professionals in South Florida.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Aside from overcoming the financial difficulty of my father’s death and completing college, the start of my company was one of my greatest challenges. My biggest struggle as an African American woman with great credit was obtaining financing. Additionally, I feel there were many naysayers who did not believe in my vision and could not see my path to success. I had to learn very quickly how to block them out to preserve my focus and passion for entrepreneurship.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with South Florida Pediatric Homecare Inc. – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
South Florida Pediatric Homecare Inc. services children and adults with medically complex conditions who would spend their lives in intensive care units or hospitals. SFPH allows these acute patients to come home which decreases infection rates and increases the quality of care. SFPH specializes in caring for premature infants, ventilator and tracheostomy patients, Intravenous therapy, medication assistance and any service that can be provided in the home care setting. SFPH provides skilled and non-skilled nursing and therapy services. The company currently services residents of Broward and Miami-Dade Counties.
What I am most proud of is providing jobs to over 600 professionals in South Florida. What sets my company apart from others is the combined clinical department’s experience of over 70 years in nursing and the personalized attention that we give to every patient and family. Great home health care is more than just having the medical background, its holistic approach to patient and family care that provides a nurturing environment for everyone in the household. I built the company with the understanding that in order to provide quality care training was essential, therefore my company has a full-time clinical education department and every nurse must complete our training prior to them ever caring for our patients regardless of their experience.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The plans for the future include expanding to a larger office to accommodate the companies growth and possibly expanding to other counties.
