Today we’d like to introduce you to Mimi Jeanite.
Mimi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, everything really started a couple of months after I graduated from college. I graduated in December of 2016 from Full Sail University with a Bachelor of Science in Recording Arts which is in its purest form essentially just sound engineering. After a few months, I was taking a trip to Atlanta because I felt like that’s where the next step of my life needed to be placed at. On my way there I got into a horrible accident which resulted in me losing my car then a couple of weeks after, I lost my job. Because I had no way of getting around to find another job and no money I eventually lost my place too. In the month of June, a month before I had to move out of my place, I decided that I would complete a project of mine called “Honestly…”. In the start of everything, I had no idea the form that it would take or the impact it would start.
After I got the tracklist ready my partner DVNT asked me, why not create a music video to express what I was feeling throughout the creation of the songs themselves? From his idea I thought, why not do them all?! I bounced off my ideas with him and usually when he says something he’s just spitting out ideas, not really expecting me to take them seriously. I’m the one that actually goes through with the ideas and makes them a reality. We’re honestly the best “working” couple I could have ever asked for. Before I had gotten fired from my job I had a couple of months where I was promoting a previous release by handing out index cards with the name of my song and my name to customers that came into the line. There was a videographer that came back and expressed that he liked that I was still focusing on my passion even though I was at work and thereafter gave me his information to contact him. We had a photoshoot a couple of days after that.
A couple more months passed before I called him again and this time, to shoot the visual. When time came to shoot I had no money to pay him. Things were getting tighter in my pockets as the day came closer for me to move out, so I paid him with food but, that can only help for so long. He agreed to shoot the rest of the footage for me and allowed me to edit the actual visual. I thank God for him. I would not have begun this journey if not for my partner and him being so understanding. We spent two days shooting one day in June and one in July. The work ethic I learned during those times not only helped me grow as an artist but especially as a business owner. Spending over eight hours of shooting time and forgetting to eat didn’t phase me, I didn’t even think of it! The day came where I had to move out, July 31. By August 25, 2017, I released my first ever directors cut visual playlist, “Honestly…”, which you can now find on YouTube! I was so proud of myself for completing something I was so passionate about.
After releasing all of my pain caused by heartbreak, the car accident and losing materialistic ties but also being grateful for having everything I needed, this visual was closer to my heart than anything I had ever felt before. Remember, I went to school for sound engineering, I had no idea the talent I had in directing and the actual use of a camera. After many nights of asking myself the question should I go back to work for someone where I can be fired over something tragic happening or should I start my own business doing something that I love and having the option to be around amazing people? I chose the latter. I refused to let anyone ever take advantage of my time or energy like that again. In February 2018, Mimi Industry LLC was born and I was able to complete the “Honestly… Trilogy” which ended this year on its anniversary, August 25, 2019. When I receive my first award I’m gonna have a lot of people to thank for sure.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been smooth, but the journey is definitely worth it. They say in order to make money you need to have it and because I chose not to work for anyone I had no actual income. I had to rely on other talents of mine and my mom for assistance. I would take in hair appointments just to get some extra cash. I got into business with someone I can now call a friend and did taxes at his business for the season. My mom is someone that I have to repay whenever I reach a point to actually take care of her. She believed in me so much that she agreed to invest in me more money even after the college tuition that she already put in for. I was able to buy the camera that films, to this day, the very visuals that I shoot. I honestly can’t thank her enough.
There are moments also when you have a dry spout where it seems everyone wants a quote or an estimate but no one actually puts in a deposit or books you. Keep your head high, I take those moments as a client that I’m either being saved from working with or a time to learn more tricks of the trade to be able to execute the vision better when they’re ready to go through with the booking process.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mimi Industry – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
