Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Alvarez.
Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a Broker at Intracoastal Real Estate Group and an active member of Latinas Power. Latinas Power is the official movement for Latin women to succeed in the US. The movement was launched in August of 2016. We are celebrating 1 year this month. The Founder of Latinas Power is Zulmarie Padin. She’s an International Business Consultant and the Career Expert of Univision in TV show Despierta America, the Good Morning America of the Hispanic community.
I came across this organization in February. A trusted friend called me, excited she told me about Latinas Power and a little about the founder. I went home and researched for about 15 minutes and I signed up. Since I’ve been in the group, I’ve done a radio interview about Empowering Women where I had to mention Latinas Power. I’ve built valuable relationships with successful women and have received mentorship by Zulmarie, the Founder.
The founder’s mission is to eradicate the fact that Latinas open three times more businesses than the national rate in the US, but the annual income is $52k vs. $200k than that of other members of the population.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have definitely been some challenges. But having a community of like-minded and successful individuals can really empower you to overcome or move pass through those challenges. For me having a community of like-minded women has served as an engine. There’s always someone to provide support, to listen, mentor or/and collaborate with you. To succeed we need a network of women who are committed to our success. Is who we surround ourselves with, we can’t do it alone.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Latinas Power story. Tell us more about the business.
Latinas Power is a movement to empower women in the community. Most women have the mindset that we can do it all alone. We can be a wife, a mother, take care of our aging mother, a professional, open a business etc. Having this mindset and wearing so many hats it’s one of the reasons we set our dreams and goals aside. Latinas Power Movement is bringing awareness to women in the community that we do not have to do it all alone. We are here not only to support each other but help each other succeed in accomplishing our dreams and goals.
This organization is not just another networking group. Actually, it’s not a networking group. Zulmarie teaches us the importance of listening to others before we go brag about what we do. People do business with those they like and trust. And for someone to like and trust you, you must build a relationship. The organization opens up space through monthly events, workshops, webinars and other opportunities for us connect with one another and build those relationships.
What are your plans for the future? What are you looking forward to or planning for – any big changes?
I believe more than ever, people are becoming more self-aware, not only about their own needs, but also the needs of others. With this shift currently happening, Latinas Power Movement is currently expanding to Broward and Palm Beach Counties. But in 2018, the movement will be going national to most cities where we have a large Hispanic community to replicate what we are doing here in Miami.
On September 23, we have our biggest event, Latinas Power Summit. The event is being sponsored by Miami-Dade College and being held at Miami-Dade College, Wolfson Campus in Downtown Miami. We are expecting over 400+ powerful women representing Latinas Power and companies across various industries. The event will be jammed packed with fresh, actionable workshops, a panel discussion and keynote speakers like Tatiana Lopez, Global Brand Partner at Facebook. It’s an event you don’t want to miss!
