Meet Amanda Patterson of Caring Therapists of Broward in Davie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Patterson.

Amanda, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Being in private practice and a business owner was not on my radar. Upon leaving graduate school, I figured I’d work at an agency and change lives that way. Through time, I realized I would have a much bigger impact by going out on my own. Once that built up after two years, it was time for me to start a group practice. In 2015, Caring Therapists of Broward was born. It was with a good friend of mine that we came up with the name. We wanted a synonym for empathy so we came up with caring. Since then, the practice has doubled in size and we moved to a new location in Davie, Florida. Every month, we are doing over 400 sessions with people and making an impact. It’s beyond anything I’d imagined as a graduate student.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Heck no! There have been tears. There have been many tears. There have been many late nights. There have been many early mornings. I’ve made mistakes. Other people have made mistakes. My biggest struggle has been not comparing myself to other people. I’m a therapist and I teach people this EVERYDAY! And here I am over here judging myself and comparing myself to other people. Something I’ve learned as a business owner is to stop comparing myself to other people and start comparing my business year to year.

Please tell us about your business.

We are known for providing high quality service in a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. Our clients love our office. You walk in and there’s coffee ready for you. Our team is constantly greeting people and making sure everyone feels welcome. We work together as a team and it shows in our clinical work. We specialize in depression, anxiety, trauma and couple’s work. We have therapists who work primarily with children. Almost every office has toys, games and arts and crafts. For the adults, we have couches where they sit and pour their hearts out.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I’d have started earlier. No one in graduate school told me about private practice. And owning your business is the way to go. Also, I would have cared less about what other people thought of me and cared more about what I thought of myself.
