Today we’d like to introduce you to Santiago Cantillo and Patricia Baro.
Santiago, Patricia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2013, we got together to form Mixed Media Collective from a shared love for art and design. Having both worked in graphic design and marketing for over 12 years we wanted to create a company that focused on creating visually appealing and meaningful content for small businesses and individuals. We’ve grown quite a bit since 2013 and can’t deny that a large part of our growth has come from making strong efforts to build and maintain partnerships with our clients. Our goal is to help the individuals and businesses we work with progress however possible and in turn, we progress alongside them. Keeping this as one of our main goals has definitely gotten us to where we are today. So, if you’re one of those peeps we’ve worked with before or still work with…thank you!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Entrepreneurship and chasing your dreams is rarely a smooth road. But that’s part of what makes it great. We’re pretty sure we’ve run into some of the same struggles as other companies but coming up with procedures and putting systems in place that benefit our clients as well as ourselves has been fun to figure out. Ultimately, any struggle we’ve been through and go through is a learning experience that can only help to make us better than we were yesterday.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mixed Media Collective story. Tell us more about the business.
We design cool stuff. Just kidding. I mean, we do. But that’s not all we do. From consulting to full design and development, our experience and interests have given us the capability to offer our partners a wide variety of products and services. Design, Web services, Printing, Video, Photography, Branding, Naming, Copywriting, Consulting and Product development. The work we’ve done is probably seen more often than people know. We’ve done work for the Arts & Entertainment District and its events, the Bird Road Arts District, The Filling Station Lofts, NR Investments, The Barlington Group, The Leah Arts District, Ball and Chain, Baby Jane, Kiki on the River, JLPR, Prism Creative Group, La Succulenta, Sakura Soap Co., among others. Aside from having designed and branded for some of these businesses we’ve also had the chance to meet and work with some great artists along the way such as Evoca1, Diana Contreras, RONE, Anthony Lister, Ruben Ubiera, Jose Mertz, 2 Alas, Krave, Yumi Collective, Greg Mike, and Chor Boogie to name a few. What sets us apart from others is a matter of opinion. Because we make an effort to customize each and every one of our projects it’s difficult to say what sets us apart. With so many great design agencies out there, we each have our own style and approach.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck is what you make it. While obviously, it may seem that we’ve inexplicably landed a project or client, more often than not, it’s happened because of a decision or series of decisions that we or our clients have made to get us there. Sometimes the decisions result in something better than we expected and other times not so much. But, we always try to be conscious of our decisions and opportunities we may come across.
