Today we’d like to introduce you to Kurls.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always been in love with hair. After high school graduation, I wanted to go directly into hair school. But being of a Caribbean background that was a faux pas. But it crazy how many years I am exactly in the same spot I was destined to be. I started off with no clientele I just took a leap of faith hoping that I would make it. I am extremely proud of how far I’ve grown as a stylist. I’m thankful each day to my clients that purchase and allow me to style their hair.
Now, Tresses by Kurls started when I noticed there was a void that I could fill. As a stylist, I noticed some clients didn’t & still don’t know much about hair extensions and always asked for my recommendation. So, I figured let’s cut out that middle man and let me be their direct supplier for all their hair extensions needs. I carry everything from bundles to pre made wig units. I also make custom units whether it’s a lace closure or lace frontal unit. It can be customized with color, cuts, or styling.
Has it been a smooth road?
It was not smooth at first. It’s very hard as a new brand to gain people’s trust! But once I had my products on hand and they were able to experience it prior to purchasing, that made them feel more comfortable with the decisions that I was making for them. Pricing was definitely the hardest thing to get together. I didn’t want to be priced low & also not high. I wanted to be in the middle where my clients can see that me supplying the hair would be beneficial for them. Also, showing them that I value them as my clients. So, each purchased includes a free install.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Tresses By Kurls story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a full-service hair extensions line. I carry everything from bundles, closures, frontals, pre-made wig units, custom made units and full lace units.
I specialize in custom made units. These units are all hand-sewn and/or colored by me.
I am most proud of how far I’ve grown since I initially started four years ago. I started with just three hair types. Straight, deep wave, and body wave. I now have six hair types + closures, frontals, & wigs.
What sets me apart is the personalization that I give to each of my clients. Each purchase comes with customization.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I don’t think it will change per se. Everything just comes back around. Everything has a life cycle. But I will definitely be keeping up with the constant beauty changes. Whether it’s taking classes, or model, and or trying things out on my own. In this industry, you can never stop learning or perfecting your craft.
