Meet Renée Taylor of Voor Hem (Men’s on-demand grooming services) in N Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Renée Taylor.

Renée, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been a hairdresser since 1993. During my career, I have worked with all textures of hair. My passion has always been coloring and cutting hair. You can change a person’s whole vibe with a fresh cut and color. It can update & refresh a person’s look and boost their confidence significantly. There’s a lot of instant gratification for me as a stylist as well. Who doesn’t love that?

In 2000, I started working at a predominantly black salon. There I learned the art of hair braiding, weaving and how to maintain dreadlocks, which I find very challenging and relaxing to do.

Then in 2012, I started working for a very well-known salon in Brickell. The salon, when requested, would provide stylists to hotels and residences in that area to service clients. I found that amazing, freeing from the salon environment, and ultimately a very personal service for the client. That’s where my passion for providing a more personalized service and my love of freelance began.

When I left there, I opened a salon suite. I begin to use platforms such as Facebook, Style Seat & Instagram to build my business, as well as some part-time work with a freelance, in-home styling company.

The concept of Voor Hem was birthed out of the idea that if I can go to busy women’s homes to style their hair, why not go to busy men? One of my most notable male clients is real estate mogul Jorge Perez. I would do his hair while he typed away on his blackberry and shared his business acumen with me.

I hope to grow my on-demand men’s grooming company city, state and eventually nationwide. Men need personal services such as mani/pedis, massage, facial, etc, as their lifestyles can be very hectic as well. My company helps them stay on track with their grooming regime without having to leave the comfort of their home or office.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest challenge had been getting the word out about my services. Most of my clients have been gained by referrals and word of mouth.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
What sets me apart from others is my meticulous attention to detail. I listen to my client’s needs and repeat it back to them, allowing them to be a part of the process, step by step. I’m am trying to make them into walking billboards & lifelong clients. I’m very fortunate to have had many experiences and been able to develop a certain skill set over the years. I love being able to cater to and relate to people from all walks of life.

What were you like growing up?
I was always very independent growing up. I was the oldest child of a single mom. I had a lot of responsibility. I have always loved the process of making, building and learning new things. I’m a person who always has some type of project going on. I sew, I do woodwork, I paint, I make costumes/jewelry, etc. Anything artistic and creative makes me happy. I also like being able to mentor/teach others. I sometimes do classes to younger stylists. I also volunteer hair services for foster children on occasion.
