Meet Steve Boxall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Boxall.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Steve. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a photographer and I grew up in the South of England. I graduated from the University of Gloucestershire with a degree in fashion and editorial photography. After college, I moved to London to start my photographic career where I worked for six years before leaving England to travel the world on a two-year circumnavigation of the globe, finally settling in Miami, Florida.

After moving to the US and resuming my career, I worked with some of the worlds greatest photographers including Richard Avedon, Hans Feurer, Steve Hiett and others. Now, I am a commercial and editorial photographer happy to be a legal-alien in the USA. I like to say, “I’m all about capturing images of a fabulous life,” and that’s completely true. More uniquely, I work in weightlessness and enhanced gravity for The Zero Gravity Corporation. Ask me how I spent a full day floating in Zero Gravity (hint, it’s got nothing to do with being an alien!).

Film and video had also been a part of my life, I literally grew up on set with my father who worked for 30 years at the BBC (thanks Dad you’re awesome!). Storytelling is what motivates me, whether it’s for clients, family, other legal-aliens or simply for myself, making great images whilst having fun is a challenge that inspires me every day.

List all the clients… Yes no??

Clients include TransDev, Solis Health, Medtronic, Viva Resorts, Miccosukee Gaming Resorts (Agency – McClatchy), Kimpton Hotels, Peroni (Agency – The Bank), British Airways – (Agency – BBH), Virgin Atlantic, Stellar McCartney, Adidas, Sports Illustrated, Elle, Venus Swimwear, Antonym Cosmetics, Condé Nast Traveller, National Geographic, Verizon, Royal Caribbean, Zurich Insurance (Agency – McCann-Erickson), Ally Insurance (Agency – Grey Group), Paramount, Universal, BBC, Univision, Telemundo, Miacucina, Zero Gravity Corporation, Nasa, KLM, Aerogel Technologies, X-Prize Foundation, Google.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Has it been a smooth road? I don’t think any business or enterprise has a completely smooth road to success. Before starting a business most people think their road to success is going to be a linear path, from 0 to 100 and you’re rich! The truth is, that path looks more like spaghetti, but as the saying goes: it’s the journey that’s important.

For me, I hardly made it easy for myself. I started my career in the UK and once I got my foot in the door, my wife and I sold all our possessions, down to two backpacks and left to travel the world for a year (as you can see, I am a firm believer in the journey being the important factor). That year became the best two years of our lives. We traveled through Asia, lived in Australia for almost a year and then set off again, traveling through the Pacific and Central America, we finally settled in Miami because we loved the climate and the culture also it’s so close to America, LOL. A brand new country with little to no contacts but fantastic weather!

Once in Florida, I had to restart my career, taking a step back and becoming an assistant again. During those early years, I worked with some of the most renowned photographers in the world, including Richard Avedon, Hans Feurer, Steve Hiett and many other photographers whose names you don’t know, but who helped shape me as a professional. All these factors help prepare me for the hardest part, building a body of work and getting a roster of clients.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Steve Boxall Photography – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in photographing people and I have a saying “I’m all about capturing images of a fabulous life.” This has led me to specialize in advertising, editorial and portraiture photography. I really enjoy the process of making great images of people at their best, and I love to share that experience with my clients. Bringing the highest level of professionalism whilst maintaining the most amount of fun is the only way to work!

I also have a very unique client that I have been working with for over 13 years, The Zero Gravity Corporation whom I feel very privileged to be able to work with. Each job involves taking photographs and video in microgravity on a parabolic flight for either scientific research, commercial advertising or just for clients that want to experience Zero Gravity here on earth. Think of Nasa’s astronaut training program and you get a pretty good idea. The image that I am most know for is possibly my image of the late Professor Stephen Hawking, floating in Zero Gravity.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Over the next 10 years, I’d like to see my business continue to grow, with more new clients and challenging projects that take me to compelling places. One of the themes throughout my life has been travel and a love of visiting different countries and cultures. I hope that through my work, I can continue to take photographs of people at their best in the most incredible locations.
