Today we’d like to introduce you to Ernesto Fernandez.
Ernesto, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started playing the flute at the age of six. I continued my music studies through high school and attended FIU for my bachelor’s degree in music performance and music education. Afterward, I attended the University of Miami where I earned my masters and later on my doctorate in music performance and music business at the Frost School of Music.
Throughout those years and up to this day, I remain active as a recording and performing solo artist in multiple genres like classical, Latin, and jazz. I have collaborated in multiple GRAMMY and Latin GRAMMY-nominated recordings. Just recently I released my own feature album titled “Pa’lante” with fresh arrangements of Cuban standards and some originals as well. The album features a number of world-renowned artists from the Latin and classical music industries.
Additionally, I maintain a career as a music educator at the public school level. I have also taught at the collegiate level and continue to provide private flute instruction to students of all levels and ages. For more information, please visit www.ErnestoFernandez.net.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Some of the struggles I encountered along the way were the language barrier when moving to the U.S., the age difference in school, health complications during critical moments of my degree, and legal issues with employers.
