Meet Alexa Merico

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Merico.

Alexa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It was right after my first semester of film school when I bought my first camera. I took myself and my camera to Art Basel and just started shooting. I discovered that composition comes so naturally to me. Almost immediately, I was thrown into the creative art scene of Miami and started my career shooting fashion and art. Along the way, I met people and experiences that taught me everything I know, about lighting, camera equipment, and the secrets to making it as a photographer.

Over these last couple of years, I’ve developed my own style and built an extensive portfolio. I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to shoot celebrities such as legendary techno Dj Jeff Mills for a cover story with MixMag, been published several times in Vogue Magazine, and most recently, shot the single cover and press photos for Noah Cyrus newest song “July”.

This year, my husband and I started our own production company, Natural Productions. We film, produce and direct videos, I handle the photoshoots and he specializes in music production.

This is only the beginning of a long journey of growth and success and I am excited to where I am headed.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Life is never a smooth road. I can openly admit that most of my struggles started within myself. The problem with achieving a lot in a short period of time is it’s easy to fall just as fast. Changes in my life temporarily inhibited me from continuing the relationships and network I’ve built in the previous years. I was no longer at the forefront of the industry. Jobs became less frequent and money got tight. I ended up getting a job serving in a restaurant, I got comfortable with the routine, and I barely left time for continuing my photography career. I lost confidence and motivation and found myself in a deep hole of depression. This past year, I decided it was time to stop sulking and get my head back in the right place. I quit my job, I changed my mindset, I made time to create shoots to become relevant on social media again, and before I knew it, in one month, I had booked two of my biggest jobs in my career. From that moment, I have been in a better place mentally and that has made all the difference in my work.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
What I love about photography is, it’s honestly just one giant game of dress-up. I love to create a mood or emotion in my imagery by using fashion, props, lighting and set design. I am known for my use of colors and composition and how I pose my models to create a scene. I can say I am most creative during spontaneous shoots, I am not the best at planning things. I usually find random objects or locations around me and incorporate them into my shoots and more times than not, it turns out better than what I planned.

Life isn’t perfect and of course, I have to shoot all sorts of boring stuff too, you know like family photos, events, bachelorette parties, etc. but my heart is in the art and fashion. My dream is to shoot for all the major brands, have my photos on storefronts and billboards, in magazines and album covers. I wanna be all over.

I still have a lot more to learn but really though, I am most proud of how I just keep going. No matter what.

What role has luck had in your life and business?
That’s an interesting question. I don’t really believe in “luck”. I believe in manifestation and the power of your mindset. Everything in life is energy and it has a ripple effect. Some can say I was lucky to have met all the right people when I first started photography and that got me to where I am today, but I see it as just being confident and personable and believing in yourself, and other people will reciprocate that energy. Thats how you get far in this industry, it’s seriously all about who you know! Once I stopped believing in myself, I lost everything. But everything happens for a reason. At this point in my life, I am more focused than ever to reach my goals, and I am open and ready for change at any moment, just trusting that its all part of my journey.
