Meet Evelyn Suero of Suero Law in Brickell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evelyn Suero.

Evelyn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Getting to this point involved a ton of faith and a lot of hard work. I was born and raised in the global melting pot of New York City into a family of limited means. As a child, I always knew I wanted to be involved in business to some degree. For me, entrepreneurship was key to escaping poverty. Despite a very challenging childhood and struggles along the way, my tenacity paid off and I found my way to the University of Pennsylvania Law School where, unsurprisingly, I took a liking to contracts and international business. However, I didn’t begin my practice until several years after graduation because I decided to focus my energy on raising my young son. I worked in the real estate industry and then after a few years moved to Florida to focus on my legal career.

As a newcomer in the area, I had to start from scratch, making new friends and forging business connections. As a law clerk, I paid attention and learned how to build a law firm from the ground up, and as an associate, I learned the art of negotiating a complex business deal in two languages. I was also a serial networker and took advantage of every event where I could meet with attorneys who were leaders in their field, and I joined boards and committees so I could increase my visibility. Once I finally launched the firm, I already had a solid reputation as a leader in the community and I had accumulated a large network of professional referral sources. It took off from there and after three years in business for myself, I’ve had the privilege and honor to do meaningful work in my field, and the opportunity to appear as a featured speaker/commentator at the World Trade Organization (WTO) Public Forum, Univision Despierta America, People en Español Poderosas Live!, and many others.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I never expected the road to be smooth or predictable, I just focused on the destination. I always knew I wanted to go into business for myself so when the opportunity presented itself, disguised as a setback, I accepted the challenge. I believe everything happens for a reason and it was those challenges and detours that led me here. Even when things got tough, I just made sure to learn and grow as much as I could out of every circumstance. Students who have taken my Negotiations class could tell you how I feel about obstacles: you make them work for you, you let nothing, not one moment of your life go to waste.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am the founder and principal attorney at Suero Law, PLLC, a startup and entertainment law firm. It was founded and is based in Miami, an exciting city for entrepreneurs. It was borne out of my love of ingenuity, creativity, entertainment, and all things global. The law firm focuses on the legal needs of entrepreneurs and creatives and as such, represents a very diverse group of clients, from entertainers who are capitalizing on their fame to create unique businesses, to philanthropists seeking to launch nonprofit organizations, to local and international business owners who are leveraging their global network and modern technology to reach new customers. As the firm’s principal attorney, I handle all aspects of my client’s business endeavors. and since I am fluent in both English and Spanish, I can directly communicate with my Latin American and European clients in their native language. This personalized service sets the firm apart.

I am most proud of my incredible clients and for being a catalyst for change in my community. Many clients have told me that it was my encouragement, guidance, and confidence that inspired them to take the leap into entrepreneurship. I believe that I am able to do this because of my own journey. I do not simply believe they can succeed, I know they can. The skies the limit when you are working with a great team. I am very proud that I can set an example and that my role as legal advisor empowers others to succeed.

As an entrepreneur myself, I can relate to my clients. We all want a successful business, but it takes investment and discipline. You need a solid corporate foundation, bulletproof contracts, registered trademark(s), licenses, etc. And if you want to engage in global business (which is inevitable in Miami), you also need to consider how federal regulations and foreign laws affect your business. At Suero Law, I help you understand how all of these issues affect your business so you can prepare and launch your business for success, not failure. With Suero Law, you StartUp Before You Startup®.

When you look back, what are you most proud of?
The proudest moment of my career was actually a personal one. It was witnessing my son graduate high school with honors and telling me that at some point he would like to start a business just like me. He is my greatest inspiration and to know that I can inspire someone like him to overcome any and all limitations and follow his dreams is really what I am all about. I am now working on a book for entrepreneurs, so my next proudest moment will be finally publishing it!
