Meet Rebecca McCallum of Rkm Photography in Fort Lauderdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca McCallum.

Rebecca, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been a creative person, I started as a musician but realized there were not many ways to make money as a musician (that I would want to explore anyway). So, when I got to college, I decided to take Film classes as my humanities and fell in love. I then went on to get a “Real Job” and HATED IT! So, I eventually quit pursuing my creative self, resulting in my photography business. It has been an exciting and incredible ride, taking me to places like Seattle, Oregon, Chicago, Vermont, Georiga, Texas, the list goes on! I wouldn’t trade my business for anything.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This journey is never easy. You invest all of your being, time, and money into creating a business all while hoping and praying you’re doing it the right way, with the hopes it starts to pay for itself. There have been many setbacks from gear being stolen (still recovering), to balancing your personal life with work life. The most important struggle would be with yourself. You are always doubting and questioning if you are doing things “the right way.” I just remind myself there is no “right way” and what works for them may not work for me etc.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Rkm Photography story. Tell us more about it.
I would say I specialize in Wedding photography, specifically outdoor venues with trees and greenery. My friends like to call me the tree whisperer (I’ll take it!), but I do provide family sessions, and portrait sessions as well. I like to think I have a way of capturing pure emotional connection be it with your spouse or children, all while showcasing the story of the environment around you.

We always love to ask about the support network – have there been people, perhaps mentors or advisors, who have played a big role in your success?
There are so many people I could shoutout (basically all my best friends) always having my back and pushing me to be a better me. But the one person I would have to specifically shout out is my best friends mother (basically my second mother), she is the one who pushed me and paid for me to create my business as a present to me. Having a parental figure really believe in you and know your potential means so much more than anyone can imagine.
