Today we’d like to introduce you to Javier Aleman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am Cuban and I was born in Santa Clara, a small city in the center of the country. When I turned sixteen, my parents decided to move to Havana and, finally, when I adapted to it and had already started my medical career and my first projects, we moved again, but this time to the United States, all these changes and people I found myself on the path that inspired me to start writing.
As an immigrant in the United States, I began in different types of work, in which I have been changing during my stay here, exactly 14 jobs that I have had since I arrived in 2016 and, of course, none related to the field that really interests me. Inside me grew a kind of reactionary and romantic spirit that made me write all the time and that’s how everything related to my literary life began, the mixture of books, influences, and events that occurred led me to create a blog of poetry and to share my material with everyone who wants to read it.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As an immigrant and a Latino, it was difficult for me to leave behind everything that inspired me and start a new life in a place I did not know or that I did not feel part of. When I left Cuba, I left many feelings and a great desire, but the political and economic situation of the country forced me to abandon it. For me, the biggest obstacle when arriving was having to break the ideological barrier that makes you feel like a foreigner in another land, another flag, and another language, only then can I start taking advantage of the media and artistic freedom offered in this country.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a writer, and my specialty is poetry, it’s about what I write the most. Although I also wrote stories and scripts. The people who follow my work recognize me more as a poet.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Absolutely nothing, I like where I am, I am growing, learning and starting, what I have done is what got me here, this is my moment in this way.
