Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Serrano.
Luis, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for art. I developed an early interest in it from grade school and pursued it all the way into high school. I was accepted into DASH, a prestigious magnet high school that I planned to graduate with a focus in Architecture. But my mind was always in the clouds, and the academic courses were setting me back so I eventually dropped out and finished my schooling elsewhere. After high school, I returned to my home town of San Francisco, California. At the time, California was at the precipice of a cannabis revolution and I quickly became immersed in the cannabis culture. I saw beyond the mainstream use of marijuana and imagined a world of possibilities.
Time passed and eventually, I returned to Florida. Fast forward a few years and one day I found myself searching for a cannabis theme t-shirt only to be disappointed by the poor quality available at the time. Because I had a background in art and never stopped sketching or drawing, I decided to design a few shirts with the goal of possibly printing one for myself to wear. My ideas for the designs came from a minimal perspective that was simple enough to be understood universally by anyone. Friends and family loved the shirt designs so much that I decided to open up an online store and Excelsior Brand was born.
Has it been a smooth road?
Like any new business, there have been many unforeseen challenges that have come along. A recent challenge is the marketing of hemp products on social media. As a small business owner, it is up to me to market my products. Most of my marketing is done through online platforms like Instagram and Facebook. While social media has made it easier for entrepreneurs to use online platforms to market their products, most social media policies prohibit the advertisement of products associated with hemp or cannabis. This, therefore, has set a limit on the amount of reach I have online, making it a bit harder on my end to reach potential customers on social media. One day in the near future, I’m sure most of these social media platforms will change their policies as more states legalize cannabis around the nation.
Overall, I can say that although there have been many obstacles and challenges, I wouldn’t change what I am doing for the world.

I want to help embrace a lifestyle focused on natural and sustainable living. I understand that there is a problem in the fashion industry known as “fast fashion.” The problem with fast fashion is that it creates problematic levels of waste and accelerates water and air pollution. It is also a major contributor to greenhouse gases. For these reasons, I have decided to switch over to natural hemp fibers and organic cotton as the material for my clothing. Recently we launched our eco-friendly Hemp Snapback Caps made from 100% hemp canvas and it is currently our top seller. I want our eco-friendly clothing to be healthy for you and good for the planet.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Miami is a beautiful city full of life and energy. It’s known to many for its beautiful beaches and amazing weather. For many of those reasons, I have chosen Miami as my choice of residence. Recently, Miami has been making a name for itself in the art scene. Wynwood, a neighborhood in Miami, has been getting a lot of attention for its development into a center for art and interesting restaurants, bars and breweries. I love the opportunities for growth in Miami as a new business and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
As a city, we need to come together and spread the benefits of hemp and cannabis to help break the negative stereotypes. We need to get together and make sure our voices are heard in the next elections.
