Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Chern.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Evan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up in Miami I’ve always enjoyed music. Listening to the local AM stations back in the 60’s (WFUN/WQAM) and later FM radio (WEDR/WBUS/WSHE) while collecting 45’s and LP’s from various record shops and thrift stores all over South Florida. I was able to share my love of music by volunteering back in the early 80’s at the local community radio station WDNA 88.9 FM. For about 14 years my goal of turning an audience on to a bit more obscure folk, rock, blues, etc. through “Notes from the Underground”, was an enjoyable experience. I later teamed with a friend, as we became partners in the oldies location of Yesterday and Today Records found on Bird Road and 83rd Ave. After taking over the shop, it’s been quite a trip, still managing to turn both young and old on to lots of great popular and obscure sounds these past 36 years!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve always believed in records. The sound quality of analogue recordings, plus the cover artwork of many albums has always been an attraction. It’s been a bit of a struggle with the changing formats or recorded music over the years, but vinyl has made quite a comeback.
Please tell us about Yesterday and Today Records.
We specialize primarily in records, mostly music ranging from the 50’s through the 90’s. All types of music, although we go pretty deep into more obscure garage, psychedelic and progressive recordings. We clean/repair records and covers and give advice in maintaining one’s record collection when needed. The volume and quality of our offerings and the friendliness and expertise of our staff is what sets us apart from others.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My Mom letting me buy a copy of one of my first albums sitting outside on a display case of a shop on Miracle Mile in Coral Gables called the Bookworm. The record was “More of the Monkees” (mono version).
