Today we’d like to introduce you to Pepe Lazcano.
Pepe, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My name is Jose (Pepe) Lazcano. I was born in Havana, Cuba in 1972. I studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts “San Alejandro” and the University “Enrique Jose Varona” where I graduated as a professor of Visual Arts.
From 1997 to 2014 I was Professor of Painting at the National Academy of Fine Arts “San Alejandro”. Since 2014 I live in Homestead, Florida and work as an art teacher in a school for children with special needs.
I have made numerous personal and collective exhibitions in my country of origin and other countries.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My work of art has an autobiographical and experiential character. It is a work that is marked by the relationship between man and the environment in which he lives, specifically the relationship between man and the living (the home).
In my work, I reflect the problems of the human being in everyday scenes. They are moments captured from real life and reflected with a strong expressive load. My work is based on contemporary art movements such as neo-expressionism and new figuration. I use all possible techniques and explore new materials to obtain expressive and dramatic works. I use recycled material for three-dimensional works such as cardboard and wood.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
I think the artist is a human being who socializes much more than other people. In the world of art, the connection between artists and the world is vital. There may be artists who like solitude and not socialize, but I think they are the least existent. The art world is very rich and the connection between artist and public is very varied.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My work is in private and public collections in different countries. Most of them are found in Cuba, the United States and in Europe. I have made numerous personal and collective exhibitions in Cuba, the United States of America, Honduras, Mexico, France, and Denmark.
The best support for an artist on the part of the public is to be able to show the evolution of his art in exhibitions and specialized publications. My work has traveled the world and has appeared in important art publications in Europe and Cuba.
