Today we’d like to introduce you to Roldane Plaisir.
Roldane, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m also known as Roly. Growing up Haitian, my parents always knew I would be successful, but they were very strict as to what career I should have. It was either be a doctor, nurse, teacher or be in law enforcement. They wanted me to be financially secure and comfortable after graduating college, but then my father took me to my first acting audition for a pop tarts commercial in Miami when I was 12 and It was a done deal after that. I fell in love with acting. After that, I began to pursue a career in Acting and the Arts. Practical careers like being a nurse, doctor or lawyer were not cutting it for me anymore. I am a very creative individual, so after I began Acting, I went into singing and becoming a songwriter, then I went into playing the guitar and then I went into becoming a Dancer. Growing up, it was very hard to express myself because of how shy I was, so my creative side helped me to express my thoughts and emotions out loud with confidence.
God has blessed with so many talents that I constantly and continuously want to share with the world. Me becoming an Action Super Star is my #1 priority.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not!! It was really really rocky. I was born in Brooklyn, New York, partially raised in Philadelphia and did the rest of my growing up in Florida. Since birth, I’ve been bullied up until my sophomore year of high school. I was beaten up physically every single day and tortured emotionally and mentally as well. I would come home with bruises and deeply scarred, but I was still able to manage and hide my pain from my family members and friends. It was really hard building my confidence back up after all I’ve been through. Today, I’m still working on it.
When the bullying subsided and I began to pursue my career as an actress, I’m not saying that my parents did not support me, but they were definitely scared that I would struggle my whole life financially going after this big dream. They kept telling me to give it up and go after a Medical Career, but I was not going to give up something I love just to be comfortable in something that would make me unhappy in the end.
With my parents in my ear saying that my decisions were not very wise decisions, I was going to auditions and was being told that I needed more work to be done. I was not booking jobs at the rate that I wanted, so I was getting really frustrated and started to question my talent. It really sucks being looked dead in the eye and being told that they went with another individual.
I have had friends who broke me down and didn’t support me because of how big my dream was. They kept telling me that “I needed to chill” and that “I was doing too much.” Being weak minded at the time, all this affected my writing, my dancing, and my acting skills.
I became very depressed. Dealing with my parents, the individuals who didn’t support me at all, and the “no’s” I got from casting directors really brought me down. I had relationships along the way that made me happy for a little while, but those fell through as well.
In the end, I decided to just put all my focus on God because I realized that I depended on people way too much for my happiness. Ever since I began to focus on my spirituality and my relationship with God, I have felt a lot happier and the hole that was in my heart was filled.
Please tell us about your work.
I am an Actress, Singer/Songwriter, and Dancer, but I specialize in Acting and that is what I am most known for. I am proud of my growth from where I began to where I am now. I am making leaps and bounds that I never knew I would make. I am so open-minded and excited to receive advice and help from anyone and everyone who can give me constructive criticism so that I can improve in my craft.
Everyone is unique in their own way. What sets me apart and what makes me unique is my ability to adapt very well to new environments and learn new abilities of the situation or job calls for it. I can move from state to state because of my career and will still be able to accomplish the goals that I set.
Also, my goal is to build a non-profit Art Center that teaches adolescents from age 5-17 the ropes of the entertainment and Art industry. Growing up, acting classes were super expensive and I could not afford to take them, so I had to learn on my own for a while. I want to give others the chance to learn about the industry and grow in their craft without them having to worry where to get the money to attend the classes to pursue a career they are passionate about. Giving back to the community is my priority,
What’s your outlook for the industry in our city?
Of course! There are so many opportunities; you just have to look for that open door. People have to remember that opportunities will not just fall on your lap. You have to make your presence known. Anywhere you go will be a difficult challenge to build your business and brand. You have to work for it.
Remember that.
