Meet Bob Cervas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bob Cervas.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Well, when it comes to my “art,” I can’t really pinpoint a beginning or foresee an end… I just ended up here. As far back as I can remember, I’ve always had a propensity to creative endeavors, but since I was 5, I wanted to be an Architect.

Fast forward 27 years, and I have my Masters of Architecture and work 9-5 doing international store design for a major fashion retailer, but my hobbies will always remain in the arts. Since I was a kid, my free time was always spent alone, learning and teaching myself skills, and finding new creative outlets. I’ve been a painter, 3D renderer, printmaker, woodworker, leatherworker, photographer and there was even a time when I was a seamstress and owned and operated a handbag and accessory business, I even have a bag I made in a museum! I never would have imaged that growing up.

Please tell us about your art.
As you’ve just found out, I do/make/create in a ton of different ways. I just can’t sit still and always want to play with what I’m working on, leading to some fun and exciting results. My desire to expand into new territory and experiment so much is mostly due to a fear of success, an inclination to self-doubt and the idea that “if I’m doing something new, I can’t fail.”

I’ve never been much of a “talker,” so I find my artistic outlets as a way of putting my self into the world and seeing what comes of it. What drives me to continue, my art and my life is seeing that voice inspire others. Whether it’s getting inspired by a color scheme I’ve used, an arrangement of form, or a technique unique to them. If someone can grow and learn from my work, then I’ve accomplished all I ask for.
Currently, I’m focusing on my photography (mostly self-portraits)

What do you think about the conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I think that life itself can be seen as easier or harder, depending on your perspective. There are too many ways to see the positive (or negative) in a situation to blanket a response, but, what I can say is that supporting the arts and artistic expression is paramount to a thriving community. Having cities and taxpayers support initiatives to commission art and accept the culture and needs that the artistic community is pursuing is all I could ask for. More resources to learn and cultivate skills, more places to show and receive work, and more events to celebrate this beautiful city.

And for the artists out there… just DO something. You’re the one holding yourself back most of all. Let go, go forward, and try to smile while you do it.

or cry, that works too.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Honestly, the best way to support my work is to engage with it, share it, and connect with me if you have an idea you think I can help support.

The best way to contact me for artistic needs is through Instagram @somethingreallywitty.
