Meet David Michael Bowers

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Michael Bowers.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Growing up in Key West, I was surrounded by art and this exposure inspired me to start painting. I sold my first painting for $30 when I was twelve years old. I remember as a kid that my drawings were always better than my classmates, so I guess that I didn’t pick art for my future career, but art picked me.

I began my career as an illustrator mostly doing book covers for publishers in NYC. I also did several paintings for national magazines including a couple of covers for TIME magazine. Ten years later a gallery in London learned about my work, so I made the transition into fine art. After several years of producing paintings for the gallery in London, I finally decided it was time to have my work shown back in the US. It has been a rollercoaster ride ever since with plenty of highs, but of course in this profession, you have to deal with the lows as well. Bottom line, I hope to paint until I take my last breath…

Please tell us about your art.
After studying up close of my favorite paintings by the Dutch Masters (sometimes using a magnifying glass when the guards weren’t looking) I knew that their way of painting in which are executed so precisely that this was the method that I wanted to learn and perfect. I’ve spent my entire career chasing after the elusive perfect painting. Most of my paintings tell a story and sometimes the message has a dark side. It’s interesting how viewers of my work at shows seem to come up with their own interpretations.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
I taught at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh for ten years. This job afforded me the luxury of perfecting my art before I entered the crazy world of making a living with my art. Also, a huge help is having a spouse that has a full-time job.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I’m currently showing at Palm Avenue Fine Art in Sarasota, QC Fine Art in Mesa, AZ and Gallery 1261 in Denver, CO.

Also they can see current work on my web site at dmbowers.com.
