Who taught you the most about work?

Society has its myths about where we learn – internships, books, school, etc.  However, in our conversations with some of the most interesting and trailblazing entrepreneurs and creatives we noticed the biggest lessons they learned about work often came from unexpected sources.  We’ve shared some of those responses below.

Ron Weizman

Without a doubt, my father. He was a businessman, and growing up I saw firsthand how hard he worked, how dedicated he was to doing things right, and how he treated people with respect. Sidney Edward Bruno Hoeltzell

My father taught me a work ethic that I’ve never lost… that was to complete what you begin. My mother gave me a background in graphics, color theory, and visual perception because she was a great painter. She was even commissioned to create paintings for the Pope’s Florida residence in 1987. Yet compassionate teacher at Roslyn High School, NY gave me my artistic launch. Read more >>>

Rochelle Broder-Singer

My very first office job – while I was still in high school – was working for my dad. He was the head of IT at a medium-sized company, and his data entry person went out on maternity leave. He convinced the company to hire me as her temporary replacement; I also helped my dad with some of the IT stuff. Read more >>>

JUAN TORRES

Family. My family taught me everything about hard work. My maternal grandparents migrated from Spain during the civil war, bringing only hope for a better future in Venezuela. My grandfather, Santos Rodriguez, began by building radios and eventually became a contractor for the Caracas Electricity Company, starting his own business.
