We recently had the chance to connect with Russell Satterthwaite and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Russell, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is a normal day like for you right now?
These days, my project is Cypress on the St. John’s River in North Florida. I’ve been shooting from sunset until it’s dark. So my day starts with checking the weather for the rest of the day then I hop on my bicycle and put in some miles for exercise.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ve been a photographer for most of my life (45 years). For many years I worked commercially. I don’t really take on commercial jobs anymore and focus strictly on fine art photography, whether it’s underwater in the Florida Springs or landscape projects of northern Florida. One of the most interesting things that really keeps me alive is that photographing in the swamps you never know what’s next. Whether it’s alligators, snakes, otters, birds it’s all great fun.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I always like to draw and I love design and while I was in school, I always studied architecture, but after a couple of years of college I decided that sitting in a drawing table was not for me.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, I don’t know if you wanna call it giving up, but I did take a break for a couple of years after my last client and I parted ways. When I started, everything was film, there was no digital .cameras. Something about shooting with the new cameras spark my energy I think mostly it’s because you don’t have to wait several days for film to be processed. You can see it right away on the camera.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
YES
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. How do you know when you’re out of your depth?
For me that’s the whole point if you’re not pushing yourself and making yourself scared, uncomfortable, facing your fears then you’re really not living.
