Moses Barr shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Moses, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think as a personal stylist, people always assume you need to be rich to afford us. While at times yes, you do have to invest in yourself as a client or customer in need of assistance. I think alot of people assume stylists are professionals that just naturally know how to dress with no effort. But the truth is, I get creative and have to tap into that creative mind daily. Which isn’t always easy!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Moses Barr. I am a personal stylist in South Florida and I love plants, animals (as I have four cats) and a beautiful wife. My brand is Styled By Moses. I started my career as a model in 2013 walking runways in Michigan. Then around 2017 I started doing photography. And know I’ve since evolved into the world of patterns, loving creative style and coming up with some expressive outfits for myself and clients right here in Florida.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My mother taught me about work. I always saw her get up at 3am to study and meditate. Then by 6:00 am she was out the house on her way to work. She always took a bus wherever she went and encouraged me to always look clean, iron my clothes and look like where I want to go. That mindset always stuck with me to this day. She’s among the most confident women I know.
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
After almost losing my wife due to my lack of communication, intimacy and passivity, years went by and I just was too comfortable. I treated her like a roommate and she almost left me. I remember feeling like a failure. Like there was no hope. I didn’t really understand what was wrong with me. I loved her. She knew that. But she needed more. So I prayed and put my big boy boots on and began pursuing my wife again like I used to. And we’re here 16 years later
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I used to hear in church all the time that God only wanted to be worshiped with one kind of music. That He has a formula to be reached. That He won’t allow me to listen to different music and that my culture (being African American) doesn’t matter. That we as Christians can only do certain things and not explore life. I felt stuck. Restricted. Not free like the Bible actually teaches. While I believe we need boundaries I have since learned that God is so vast. He’s so big. And that His life He’s given me involves exploring and adventure.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
In nature. Reading a book under a tree with a cup of coffee. Or thrifting. I LOVE thrift shopping. I just feel like the world pauses for a few hours and my mind goes into another world where vintage style and modern fashion collide. And I can shop like a kid in a fantasy land. And bring what I’m imagining into reality.
