We recently had the chance to connect with Marc Coqmard and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Marc, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Who are you learning from right now?
Right now, i have been learning mainly from trial and error, and a variety of sources whether that be fellow artists, my job environment, life experiences, and research. That’s a lot but for right now I will just say trial and error has been very key right now for me experimenting with the technique/process without trying to strategize too much. It allows me to create without really any expectations. Bound to mess up but those errors end up teaching me the best way to handle or not handle it.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Marc Coqmard, I am a Haitian-American photographer/director based in Miami, Florida. I am the founder of Reconstruct Visual Arts Lab, a production company focused on commercial and original productions.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My Dad and my high school football team shoutout STA in Fort Lauderdale. Between doing a lot of blue collar work with my dad and the intense training regimen I had in high school. I was able to be exposed to the amount of physical, and mental endurance one needs in order to get up everyday and put their will into whatever craft they are pursuing. That caliber of football training made me able to understand how to strengthen your mental/physical endurance as well as how much work it is to really be a championship team. Overall endurance is one of the most key parts of work cause its linked to how much consistency/discipline you are willing to pour into your work/craft.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
If you are in hell- don’t stop because why would you stop in hell? You gotta keep moving.
You need to learn to be able to put the battery in your own back; become your own biggest cheerleader because sometimes you won’t always be getting that validation or motivation to continue.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
Innovation and authenticity to whatever project that I am going to commit myself or my team to. This means tailoring whatever project to fit the client, artist, or brand’s overall core themes and tone. If possible, trying to pull more information from the client to craft something very true to them. On the side of innovation, I feel that there are many different processes to push visuals to new levels whether its in visual effects, camera gear, sound, and other areas that I am always finding what will be the thing that is new to incorporate into said project. Constant innovation to see how can we make a visual elevate whether through new technology or older less used techniques.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
I would regret not traveling the world and making art/visuals while doing it. That is a dream of mine and a must.
