We recently had the chance to connect with Lily Marotto and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Lily, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I start my day by feeding my two cats and making sure they’re happy and cared for. After that, I enjoy a cup of coffee while I check emails and social media updates. Then I take a shower and do a short warm-up to feel energized and ready for the day ahead.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Lily Marotto, a Couture fashion designer and founder of LilyMarotto.com. My work combines traditional Couture techniques with innovative technology, including custom textile printing and 3D garment design. Each piece is crafted with individuality, slow fashion principles, and the highest quality standards. With over 15 years of experience in the fashion industry, I now focus on custom-made projects for my own brand and help other designers and brands bring their collections to life—offering expertise in design development, pattern-making, and high-end garment construction.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
I’ve been lucky to learn from so many inspiring people throughout my journey. Early on, I trained with a talented designer who taught me patience, precision, and the true artistry of Couture. I also have a formal education in fashion design, and I’m so grateful to my professors for giving me not just technical skills but a deep passion for every project I take on. Over the years, working closely with clients and other designers has taught me just as much, always pushing me to grow, innovate, and bring their visions to life. All of that—mentorship, education, and real experience—has shaped me into a designer who leads with creativity, quality, and heart.
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
I don’t really believe in ‘failing hard.’ We’re all human, and none of us have lived this life before. Of course, we make mistakes or get misunderstood, but that doesn’t mean we should give up. I’ve learned to see those moments not as failures, but as lessons that help me grow, get stronger, and keep moving forward.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
I really value the ideas of my clients and my family. As a designer, my creativity can take me pretty far, but every piece has to be wearable and comfortable—otherwise, it’s just an art piece for display. Striking that balance between uniqueness and practicality can be challenging, but it’s essential. Usability, quality, and thoughtful details might limit some of my wilder ideas, but they make the design truly exceptional and wearable.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
As Edith Piaf sang, ‘Non, rien de rien, je ne regrette rien.’ I try to live with joy and gratitude, embracing every opportunity life brings. For me, it’s not about regrets—it’s about love for life, creativity, and the chance to share beauty through design. I choose to create boldly and celebrate every step of the journey.
