Story & Lesson Highlights with Heidi Gomez of Miami

We recently had the chance to connect with Heidi Gomez and have shared our conversation below.

Heidi, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
Our society consists of scrolling, swiping, skimming and everyone trades depth for speed and substance for show. Sadly, this is why people are treated like content that is consumable, forgettable and replaceable. As a content creator, this is something that has always bothered me and I want to show a different side of social media. I want my content to reflect a more authentic platform that is relatable and engaging.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Heidi Gomez and I am a former Journalist, now content creator, I truly believe that part of modern day journalism heavily includes social media and so when I needed to put my career on hold to raise my children, I decided to focus on content creation. I created my YouTube channel and Instagram-House of Heidi Miami. I focus on lifestyle and fashion related content with the occasional provocative topics to engage with my followers and incorporate a bit of a journalistic tone. I think my content is relatable to a lot of women faced with having to balance career goals whilst raising a family.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was always the girl that was afraid to blend in and follow what everyone else was doing. I wanted to be different. Not because I wanted to stand out but simply because I felt different. I was happiest dressing a little different and marching to the beat of my own drums when it came to expressing myself. Once I became a mom, I definitely felt the pressure to sensor myself and fit the mold of what a “mom” should be. “A mom should dress and look a certain way, A mom shouldn’t focus too much on her career because then she is selfishly neglecting her children. On the other hand if she is a stay at home mom, she “doesn’t work” and is kept.” This is why I started creating content. It allows me to express myself freely and nurture my individuality.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Personally, I have learned that greatest growth comes from those moments that you experience suffering or failures. The happy moments are meant to be enjoyed but the moments in which you suffer, you are meant to grow and become stronger. It’s like saying you will experience hunger by feasting on food. Your failures shape you and perfect that which needs to be improved. I have learned that there is nothing I can’t pull myself out of and there is always something to learn from.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
For me, it’s always been important to be as authentic as possible. However, realistically speaking that is easier said than done when you are sharing your life with strangers. You have to find a good balance of being genuine while keeping certain things private. I’ve learned that people don’t need to know everything about you but rather what you do choose to share should be authentic. This year in particular I do think I have shared a little more of my personality. And so I think the public version of me is the real me however not all of the real me. Some aspects of me I keep guarded.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I think I would stop worrying about others judging me. Truthfully, no matter how confident we are, it’s almost ingrained in us to worry about others judging us. It definitely is counterproductive to living life to the fullest.
