Shahini Fakhourie on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Shahini Fakhourie and have shared our conversation below.

Shahini, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I’ve always loved reading. I wanted to revisit something scary for the spooky season so I’m reading Stephen King’s It again.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Shahini Fakhourie, a designer and artist blending fashion, art, and sustainability. My work explores the intersection of creativity and responsibility, creating pieces that are both visually striking and ethically made. I focus on small-batch, thoughtfully crafted collections, often integrating embroidery, textiles, and design techniques inspired by art history. Beyond fashion, I’m currently developing new pieces that continue to push the boundaries of wearable art while reflecting my interest in craft, creativity, and cultural storytelling.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My dad. He named me Shahini, after my aunt, who was a very strong woman. I believe he knew the name would give me strength and grounding, even before I fully understood who I was or would become.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I definitely reached a point where I felt defeated — the barriers in the market I’m in can feel impossible to break through. But I’m lucky to have people in my corner who reminded me why I started. They helped me find my way back and wouldn’t let me quit on myself.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I’ve always admired Naomi Campbell for her commitment to excellence. Beyond her iconic career, she continually uses her platform to uplift others and create opportunities, particularly for black designers and models. Also, her Jamaican heritage adds a personal resonance for me with my family being from Jamaica. Her Journey and her character show how integrity, resiliance and advocacy can leave a lasting impact.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
All we truly have is the self. Letting go of names, roles, and possesions, though a difficult practice, has given me a clearer vision of a path and freed me from valuing accomplishments purely for vanity.
