Rising Stars: Meet Troy Cameron of Kendall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Troy Cameron.

Hi Troy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Troy Cameron. I’m originally from Portland, Jamaica, and now I live in Kendall, Florida. I’ve always been into music—even as a kid I was obsessed with messing around with my dad’s sound system and mixer, which I’m sure he was thrilled about haha.

I really got my start in music after meeting a friend in high school whose artist name was Benny Slacks. Up until then, I didn’t realize people could produce and record their own music at home and still have it sound professional.

Through him, I was introduced to artists like Lowaletta, No Fiction, Paperwater, and Metro Zu. I was incredibly inspired by how creative they were and how active they were in the Miami underground scene.

One day I watched a video of Lofty305 from Metro Zu making beats on YouTube using a program called “Reason.” I went home and downloaded it that same day—and I haven’t looked back since.

I discovered artists like MF DOOM, Flying Lotus, Sango, Chuck Inglish, and The Alchemist. I noticed that some of them had albums made up entirely of instrumentals, which I thought was dope for hip-hop. I had never really heard that before—the beats were just there, available for anyone to listen to, enjoy, freestyle over, or simply vibe with.

That’s when I knew I wanted to do the same thing. Sometimes words aren’t needed to make a point in life, and that’s how I treat my music. Everything is a statement.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road hasn’t been easy—there have been plenty of ups and downs. The term “starving artist” is very real. I’ve had to make sacrifices to ensure I have the right equipment, a reliable computer, and funds for travel. Sleepless nights and time away from friends and family have been part of the journey, and I’ve leaned on coffee and FaceTime to get me through. But despite all of that, it’s been worth it—I have no regrets as I continue chasing my dreams.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a beatmaker, producer, or artist—it’s hard to keep up with what the producer community thinks I should be labeled—but at the end of the day, I make beats. I’m primarily focused on releasing my own albums of instrumentals, but I also love producing for other artists. Collaboration is always fun and inspiring.

I specialize in blending different sounds and soundscapes over hard-hitting drums to get you moving, thinking, or relaxing—whatever you feel in the moment. The lack of words gives listeners the freedom to experience the music however they want. What sets me apart is my confidence in my art and my ability to simply release music instead of overthinking it or letting it sit on my hard drive. I think that’s why people gravitate toward me and my music.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Most people don’t know this about me, but until around 2012, I wanted to be a rapper. I even wrote an entire album in Jamaica—but when I went to record it and heard my own voice, I just ended up making beats instead.
