Rising Stars: Meet Smoke Delgado

Today we’d like to introduce you to Smoke Delgado.

Hi Smoke, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started making music when I was like 13. I used to write poetry when I in elementary school, but nothing serious until middle school. Me and my older brother used to rap over YouTube instrumentals. I remember the first song I ever recorded. I was in the 7th grade. My homie had the guitar hero mic, I think it was guitar hero. Not sure, but we recorded it in on FL studios. It was a diss track, I think it was recorded over a Lil Wayne beat. I can’t remember, I wish I could find it though. It was corny, but the homies was gassing me up. We was playing it at school and everybody was feeling my verse. I used to go by T-Gudda, lol. I have been hooked since. Later on my 8th-grade year, I ran into 36Ju and Chakuda. It’s been history ever since.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Not at all. I really had to polish myself. You can ask anyone around me on how far I came. I had no flow. It wasn’t there. I was offbeat, I’m being honest. I remember going to the studio with 36Ju and Chakuda when we first started our collective “BLKCIVLN”, bro… It was sad. Long story short. The engineer called me JV and the other homies varsity. It didn’t discourage me, honestly I appreciate his honesty. It brought the dawg out of me.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I don’t do enough, but nah. I am Smoke Delgado the deacon. I am a musician. I compose and curate beautiful music. Also, I’m a part-time staff writer for Citrusrap, we have dope content coming soon. I’m known for being myself in every shape and form. I’m from a city were not too many people sound or act like me, so I’m just tryna show the kids like me that grew up in the hood, it’s okay to like jazz or funk. Be yourself. I’m proud to be a part of this growing culture. Music brings us together. It makes us happy. It’s therapy. I think it’s dope. I have a small chapter of the greatest story to ever be told. What sets me apart from others is that I’m a student. I don’t abuse hip hop. I literally study music. I think I’m the last of a dying breed honestly. To sum it up, I just care.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Not to sound clique, but I don’t believe in luck. I think everything happens for a reason. Your day is written. That’s just my belief. Good or bad. No matter what. It’s going to happen. Like it or not.
