Rising Stars: Meet Shelby Bettencourt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Bettencourt.

Hi Shelby, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My love for the beauty industry started when I was about 8 years old. I lived in a small town in Massachusetts. My mom started to date the owner of our local hair salon and I found myself spending lots of time there. I was amazed at what I now know is the energy of the salon and the feeling women would get after their time here. Women would come in feeling a certain way, sit in a chair, and leave with a lifted spirit and happy. I couldn’t believe this was an actual job! At 14 years old I attended a vocational high school and took cosmetology. At 17 I was licensed, and working at my first salon.

Four years later, I made my big move and moved to Miami, Fl to pursue my dreams of being a big-city hairstylist.

Miami was a bit of a culture shock but in such an amazing way! I have learned so much about other cultures and just love how expansive this city feels.

Working in this city for over 10 years I have created my own space where no matter the culture, you can feel welcome, beautiful, and at home. In January 2023 I moved and reopened my salon, Makers Salon.

Makers Salon is the salon that I never thought I would own, but I feel so much alignment to. We not only do hair, but we pull oracle cards, host monthly breathwork sessions, and make amazing glitter lattes. I am so proud of this journey and love how this city has expanded me and my career.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With all great “success” comes struggles along the way. My main struggle has been and will continue to be my own limiting beliefs. The stories that I have told myself, and that others have passed onto me have led me to where I am, but also, held me back from more. (If that makes any sense) I believe that as humans we have the potential to create and manifest the life, we truly desire, what hold us back is our brain and beliefs that society has put on us. (Even if they have protected us or came from a “good place.”)

My healing journey has been hard, lots of crying, changing, releasing, and feeling lost. Luckily, I have had mentors, an amazing partner, a wonderful assistant (who is also my sister), and supportive staff and friends to help me along the way.

You’re not too old, too stuck, or too late to change. It won’t be easy, but in my opinion, it’s better than staying the same.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Hairstylist, Salon Owner, Podcast Host (Healthy Wealthy Stylist), Coach, and Breathwork Facilitator. I wear many hats! (haha!)

As a hairstylist, I specialize in blonding services on both brunettes and blondes. I have an eye for color and LOVE being creative working with all types of textures (curly and straight).

As a Coach, I offer free education both through my Instagram and my podcast. If you are looking for more, I offer 1:1 coaching and in-person workshops for hairstylists who want to feel better both mentally and physically in the salon through mindset work and creating better systems.

I also offer hairstylist masterminds, as a way to invite in local hairstylists who want community and have questions/insights they want to share with others. These in-person events are so special because it truly embodies community over competition.

As a breathwork Facilitator, I host monthly breathwork sessions in my salon as a way to heal, release, and manifest. This work is open to all that are called to come (hairstylist or not) and is a powerful way to tap more into yourself and your body through your own breath.

As a human, I am a forever student. I love to learn and love to share what I have learned.

What sets me apart is my energy and my vulnerability of not being “perfect” and how I continue to grow even when things get hard. Being a business owner is hard, but it doesn’t mean you have to be alone or perfect all the time. I welcome in collaborators to my life and to my business who want to learn, grow, and to share.

How do you define success?
Success to me is freedom. Freedom to do what I want and freedom from feeling scarce. When I feel successful, I feel at peace, there is always a wanting of “more” but not from coming from a place of lack, but more from a place of a higher potential.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the flashy things that come from money and strive to be there, but not at the cost of happiness or my core values. My relationship with money is ever-changing, I love money, I love what money can do and how it can help, and I know it comes and goes. I am open to receive and willing to give in order to flourish what I believe is worth investing in.
