Rising Stars: Meet Shantel Davis of Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shantel Davis

Hi Shantel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I came from a family of Seamstresses and Fashion Designers. I say this because my Mom use to sew a lot for my elder siblings when they were little. My mom couldn’t afford to buy clothing so she had to make them herself. She will just look at a certain in the display window in a store and she will make a replica of it. She never used a pattern to put a style of clothing together. Back then for her Cutting and Sewing was a lot cheaper. She use to just go by the measurements of the person that she was sewing for. She still sews now but she is just doing sewing by hand. I also learned that my Grandma use to sew until she died back in 1993. My Sisters, My Cousin use to sew, he was a Fashion Designer, He lives in California. I heard that Fashion Design is very popular up there and so is New York. So you can say Sewing runs in the family.

I learned how to sew at the age of 13 when I took Home Economics. As soon as I started to learn how to sew, I immediately fell in love with it, So it became a passion. During my High School years I sketched all of the clothes that I want to do. When I was 17 I made my own costume for a talent show that I was in. I cut and sewed the outfit. I also made a dress without using a pattern. I can still do that up to this day. So I decided to hone my skills. I have taken sewing classes here and there. I enrolled in Miami Dade Community College and Parsons of Fashion Design. I graduated with an Associates Degree. I am currently studying Business Management at Florida Technical College so I can learn how to manage my own business.

I started the clothing line Colors Are Beautiful back in October 2, 2012. The meaning behind the clothing line is to make every Woman and Man feel comfortable in what they are wearing. It is also a head turner. In 2019 I decided to get my business registered through www.sunbiz.org so that’s why I call it Colors Are Beautiful LLC. I got where I am today through hard work and dedication. You know what they say hard work pays off. I have sold out in Consignment stores. I have basically sold more than 100 of my pieces through out the years.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There has always been obstacles in my way when it comes to my fashion business. But I always overcome them. I always think it only has to take one person to turn it around. I believe in the saying from Dhar Mann ” When you do what you love the money will always follow.”

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Fashion Designer and a Seamstress. I also do Alterations and Repairs. I always make my prices reasonable for customers. I also do refashioning. For instance I can turn an old pair of jeans into a handbag. I make my own patterns from time to time when I can’t find it in the Fabric store. I also use commercial patterns to do my work. What sets me apart from others is that my clothing is one of a kind. Ones that you won’t see in a retail store. I am most proud of when my customer say the words ” I love the outfit that you made for me.” ‘Can you make me another outfit?” So when I hear this that means that I am doing something right. Everyone loves a happy customer. That’s what I like personally making my customers happy.

How do you define success?
Success means never giving up on your goals or dreams even when the things in life becomes difficult. Keep practicing on the skill that you want to master. Set your goals and achieve them. That’s what success means to me. So in other words finish what you start.
