Rising Stars: Meet Satellite Art Show

Today we’d like to introduce you to Satellite Art Show.

SATELLITE ART SHOW began in 2015 by artist Brian Andrew Whiteley as a response to the big monied and exclusivity of Art Basel proper. As practicing artists, we did not see our reality reflected during the most momentous time for visual art in America. Our first edition took over several abandoned properties in North Beach Miami. Since its original conception, SATELLITE has grown in scale and prominence.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There is always a struggle to find ways in producing our alternative vision. Mainly financial assistance and help from patrons and properties owners. It costs money to produce our event and our exhibitors come from the creative class which means they need low costs options for exhibiting their work. Some of the donated properties that we were given required us to clean them out prior to the event – so we have cleared out hoarders nests, squatters nests, dead birds, foul furniture and debris just to make our event happen.

Additionally, we have been sent cease and desists from Art Basel for using the hashtag “#notbasel. We wear that as a badge of pride as obviously we are on their radar and are making waves.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
One of the best features of SATELLITE Art Show is our performance art program curated by Quinn Dukes of Performance is Alive. Once again noticing an art form not represented during Art Basel, we place a special emphasis on this. The performance program provides guests a unique and thoughtful experience and a platform for dedicated artists to thrive. The program is constantly highlighted as the most power part of our fair.

What does success mean to you?
Success is the ability to keep going and keep moving forward. The top of one mountain is the bottom of the next. We have grown and expanded and have done editions in Austin and New York and currently operate a permanent venue in Brooklyn and plan on continuing our trajectory.
