Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarai Gonzalez.
Sarai, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always loved all things beauty growing up. I used to always paint my nails, and do my makeup, and I was always trying something on my hair from dying it to DIY masks.
Originally I started off wanting to be a makeup artist when I was 17. That carried on for a few years but when I started working as a receptionist at a nail salon, my direction changed.
I remember telling my boss that I wanted to learn to do nails and he told me that if I got my cosmetology license I could work there. Quarantine hit and I started practicing on myself, my friends, and my family. I became obsessed with it. I picked up the craft fairly quickly, according to my boss, and ever since it’s been history! I love the challenge of being a nail artist.
There are constantly new trends and art to try and everyone’s nails are so different so it never feels repetitive or “easy”. I worked at the nail salon for about 2 and a half years and then transitioned to becoming an independent nail artist and haven’t regretted it since!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been easy.
Especially when starting, learning how to work on different kinds of nails while still making them look good is a bit challenging. Building up a clientele wasn’t always easy either but if you’re consistent, market yourself, and set your boundaries you can overcome any obstacle.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a nail artist who specializes in gel extensions, structured manicures and acrylics. I enjoy a challenge so the more intricate the nail art, the better. I love being able to put my twist on people’s ideas and having clients push me out of my comfort zone.
I think what sets me apart from others is my patience and willingness to give my clients exactly what they’re asking for. I know it can be nerve-wracking to tell someone that you don’t like what they’re doing or you want to change something specific, so I try my best to make my clients feel comfortable and listened to.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I enjoy spending my free time on TikTok or listening to podcasts. Someone I like is Jay Shetty. He inspires me to be my best self and has such great insight.
He has episodes with a lot of wise people. I feel like the more you understand yourself, the more you can understand others. That aspect of myself helps me connect with my clients on a deeper level so it’s not just a nail appointment, it’s like meeting up with a friend.
