Rising Stars: Meet Sadie Goodwin of Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sadie Goodwin

Hi Sadie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m Sadie, a visual artist and photographer known in the art scene as Electric Vizion. I’ve always been an artist, but my journey truly began in 2017 when I moved to Philadelphia to attend college at Temple University. I remember Freshman year, sitting in Business Management classes feeling lost, unmotivated, and wondering what I was going to do for the rest of my career. I had just gotten my first DSLR camera, and spent a lot of time roaming the city taking photos that I would turn into surrealist compositions. One day it just clicked – I switched my major to Art Direction, started a new social media page for my artist alter ego, and stepped into my purpose with both feet.

Electric Vizion took off in the Philly art scene, and by my Senior year, I was a full-time freelance photographer. Some of my most memorable gigs included working with Her Campus, Aperture Agency, and the iconic Vans skate brand. I spent a lot of time photographing and getting to know underground artists pursuing music, fashion, modeling, painting, you name it. Their stories inspired me, and I began filming vlog-style interviews that shared the stories of other passionate visionaries defying the status quo to share their creative voice with the world.

When I graduated in 2021, I knew my mission was not to be in Corporate America, but to be a full-time artist. I continued to develop my skills, expanding into more fine art mediums including painting and street art. This opened lots of new doors for me to have my art shown in galleries throughout Philly and New York. I continued to build a portfolio of both digital and fine art, learning new techniques, and pushing myself to be a better artist each day.

I moved to Miami in June 2023 to continue expanding my career in a new, more tropical playground. My soul was calling for a change of scenery, and I have always been inspired by the vibrant culture and art scene in South Florida. Miami has welcomed Electric Vizion with open arms, and I feel very excited to see what this next chapter brings. This summer has been filled with lots of milestones – from live painting at OSOD Fest, to having a residency at Thrive Gallery in Fort Lauderdale, and being a part of countless creative events (always with my film camera in hand). I’m currently working on some new projects that will be unveiled during Miami Art Week, and continuing to collaborate with other creatives who inspire me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I attribute many of my creative gifts to my mother, Leslie, who passed away when I was 13. It’s been difficult not having her support and guidance on my journey as an artist, but also through adulthood in general. Death and loss has been a common theme throughout my life, losing multiple family members, and most recently a best friend to suicide. Some days, it is difficult to deal with the burdens of such heavy losses, but in true visionary fashion, I always try to transmute pain into love. I’m currently working on an ongoing painting series, “There Must Be A Party in Heaven”, that explores the idea of the afterlife as a grand celebration, rather than a tragic ending.

It’s also taken a lot of discipline and sacrifice to continue walking in my purpose, even when it might not be socially accepted. I had to make a lot of lifestyle changes when I moved to Miami, including taking on a full time corporate job to support myself. While I feel blessed to have stability, it has been challenging to balance all the responsibility. Being a successful artist means having a profitable business, being able to market yourself, and taking a LOT of emotional and financial risks. I have to remind myself that I’m a team of one, and to just enjoy the journey without getting caught up in the dollar signs.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a multidimensional creative, specializing in photography, fine art, and graphic design. As a photographer, I love shooting fashion, portraits, and lifestyle events. My signature aesthetic includes capturing human emotions, playing with creative angles, using long exposure techniques, and vibrant colors.

As a fine artist, my most recent body of work focuses on humans in our most pure form, our soul. The signature ‘lost soul’ figure used throughout my work is an abstract human form with a spiral head and flame-like body. It draws inspiration from the cyclical nature of life, and the connection between the physical and spiritual realms. The Lost Souls have been a recurring theme in many of my paintings and designs, encouraging the audience to see themselves in my work, as we are all just lost souls trying to find a home in this world.

I’m most proud of the way I pour my emotions into my work, often exploring heavy themes of death, rebirth, transcendence, and finding oneself, through the lens of my inner child. The painting series I’m currently working on, “There Must Be A Party In Heaven”, has pushed me to work with new techniques and mediums that continue to define my style as a visual artist. While it may seem morbid to create art about death, losing people we love is an experience that all humans deal with, and often repress instead of confronting. I hope that the Lost Souls serve as a beacon of hope and give the audience the space to deal with heavy emotions in a positive way.

One thing that sets me apart from others in the industry is my commitment to using my platform to build up other artists. Although I’m in a competitive field, I don’t see my peers as competition, but as inspiration. My goal is to continue building a community of visionaries who support each other, so we can all flourish together.
