Rising Stars: Meet Russ Mercer of South Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Russ Mercer.

Hi Russ, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been interested in mathematics. Growing up I would help fellow students in different math classes by providing clear explanations. People seemed to appreciate that. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Florida Atlantic University. I have a great fascination for computational math, cellular automata, fractal geometry and three dimensional modeling among other topics, but I have learned through experience that I also find wonderful joy and fulfillment from helping others gain understanding and confidence in their ability to reason. To communicate information that empowers students to see their own ability in a new light is a worthwhile pursuit to me. These days, I work with students one-on-one or in small groups, and I also develop educational software. The tutoring company is focused on mathematics education and academic success. It’s a way for me to combine my love of math, engineering, and teaching, while creating tools that can help students and educators.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest challenges has been meeting students where they are. Every student has a different initial knowledge and a different attitude. Finding the right approach for each one takes patience and work, but it’s also one of the most rewarding parts. On the software side, building tools that are both technically strong and helpful has taken much patience and persistence as well.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I tutor mathematics as well as other subjects, but I specialize in K–8 math, algebra, and calculus. Over the years I’ve become known for being competent, punctual, helpful, and patient, and I bring those qualities into every lesson.

What I’m most proud of is the way I’m able to empower young people through knowledge of math and technology. It’s about helping students build confidence in their own abilities and giving them a new outlook on what they’re capable of.

What sets me apart from other tutors is the depth of my background. I study mathematics at the graduate level, have done thousands of hours of math tutoring, and along the way I’ve developed teaching methods that adapt to students with different needs. I’m truly passionate about mathematics and mathematics education.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
In life, success is contentment of mind. It is knowing who we are, and what we stand for, and spending our time pursuing those ideas that define our purpose. Success is being useful to others and enjoying life immensely along the journey. As it relates to my work and clients, success is seeing my students develop the knowledge, attitude, and confidence that will allow them to excel scholastically.
