Today we’d like to introduce you to Romi Myers.
Hi Romi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I am a visual artist based in Miami, FL. My overall artistic style has been heavily influenced by the Superflat Movement, where I love incorporating vibrant colors and bold, cartoon-like imagery into my body of work.
In addition, I am fascinated with augmented reality which has pushed me further into the digital world. I have been quite fascinated with bridging the gap between both the digital and physical worlds with my most recent work.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some things have become a little smoother since beginning my artist journey a few years back.
I am learning something new every day which helps me tremendously with my long-term goals. But at the same time, the more I learn about the art industry itself, the more I discover newer and different struggles too.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My overall body of work embodies a true self-reflection of who I am by bringing the balance of everything I love between the creative, technical, digital, and physical realms to create an interactive experience beyond what has been historically expected within the contemporary art industry.
I also implement sustainable practices into my physical work like creating art pieces either of archival quality, fine art paper derived from bamboo, or simple canvas. I am a big fan of keeping my medium of choice as simple as it can be whenever possible since I love the honesty of natural materials. In my mind, it also respects its end-of-life cycle. If it was ever destroyed for some random reason, in theory, it would become part of the earth again through its natural decomposition process.
As an artist with synesthesia, I’ve begun to explore ways in which other sensory experiences can be intertwined and manipulated through my art, ultimately promoting empathy, connection, and understanding while showcasing the beauty and complexity of the human experience through playful titles and tongue-in-cheek humor.
What matters most to you? Why?
Unbiased critical thinking, kindness, and creative freedom are of utmost importance to who I am as an artist.
I feel the erosion of present-day society, marked by hatred and divisiveness, contributes to fewer opportunities for unbiased conversations that are fueled by simple curiosity and critical thinking. Being born in Brazil of Japanese and Italian lineage while living in the US, I often grapple with the challenges of being forced to define myself in one way or another, or taking sides, especially when someone assumes I was born in the US solely based on my accent, or lack thereof.
My motto is that I am neither here nor there. I am a human being like everyone else. I will be kind to anyone who is kind back, but I will walk away if the kindness is not reciprocated.
Which leads to my creative freedom. I find that my creative freedom can be stifled at times when engaging with folks who either don’t want to or refuse to understand the parody and deeper meaning surrounding my body of work, further highlighting the need for more open conversations in our world. One of the many reasons I am so committed to the “My Emojions” series at the moment.
