Rising Stars: Meet Nicole Lindsey of Miami, FL

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Lindsey

Hi Nicole, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
At first glance, my life may seem too young to be wise, but it is a journey rich with experiences that have shaped who I am today. I’m a firm believer in the saying, “everything happens for a reason,” as every challenge and triumph has armed me with invaluable skills and wisdom.

Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs, I was deeply influenced by my parents’ relentless work ethic and innovative spirit. My mother, a retired college professor, and my father, an anthropologist, both successfully navigated a variety of ventures, from running seasonal businesses to collecting and selling products and vintage items. Their determination and ingenuity instilled in me a drive to pursue entrepreneurship from a young age. At the University of North Texas, I sharpened my business awareness through various initiatives, including selling on Poshmark, representing PINK on campus, and working as an influencer for Tarte Cosmetics. My involvement with Kappa Delta Sorority further refined my skills in marketing, philanthropy, and leadership.

My military service profoundly impacted my personal growth. The challenges I faced during boot camp and as a Latina engineer in the Coast Guard revealed my inner strength and resilience. I never imagined joining the military, but it turned out to be a transformative experience that pushed me beyond my perceived limits.
As an engineer, I spent weeks or even months at a time away from home, which was both physically and mentally demanding. However, I was extremely fortunate to have a supportive network, including my husband, an Army veteran, and fellow Coast Guard member, Valdivia, who guided me through the toughest times. My military experience instilled in me a sense of confidence and self-awareness, teaching me that my capabilities are limitless, and the only barriers I face are the ones I set for myself. One of the most rewarding aspects was empowering others to embrace their authenticity and individuality. As I transitioned out of the military, I was eager to continue inspiring others to be their best selves.

I found a new opportunity to do so as a bridal stylist at Alexandra’s Bridal Boutique, a family-owned company that resonated with my values. This role allowed me to connect with like-minded, strong driven women who shared my goals and aspirations, much like my sorority days. The environment was one of growth, inspiration, and entrepreneurship, as everyone was working towards their own business ventures. This experience further solidified my passion for empowering others and fostering a supportive community while creating a business of my own.

Currently, I’m pursuing a degree in Business Marketing, which is enhancing my influencer career and laying the groundwork for my ultimate goal: opening a boutique. Some might ask why I’m taking this step now, but I believe the real question is, why not? With dedication and hard work, I’m confident in my ability to turn my passion into a successful venture. At the end of the day, I’m just a girl with a passion for fashion.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Growing up in a border city as a Mexican American presented unique challenges that shaped my identity in profound ways. Being bilingual, which should have been celebrated as a strength, often felt like a burden. I was suppressed for speaking Spanish, the language that connected me to my heritage, and discouraged from showing cultural pride. The pressure to assimilate was constant, and it felt like I had to choose between my Mexican roots and fitting in with the broader community. This struggle to balance my cultural identity with societal expectations was a defining aspect of my childhood and adolescence.

The struggle didn’t stop there. Entering the sorority world as a Latina came with its own set of challenges. The environment often felt exclusive, and I had to work twice as hard to be seen and heard. I faced subtle, and sometimes not-so-subtle, reminders that I was different—whether it was through cultural misunderstandings or the pressure to conform to a certain image. Yet, these experiences also strengthened my drive to resolve and create spaces where diversity is celebrated, and where everyone, regardless of background, feels empowered to be themselves.

Navigating the world as a Latina woman in spaces where we are often underrepresented has been an uphill battle. As a woman engineer in the Coast Guard, working on a boat full of men, I constantly had to prove myself. The challenges were not just about doing the job well but also about overcoming stereotypes and biases. Being Mexican added another layer of complexity, as I had to confront preconceived notions about my abilities and my place in the field. The experience was isolating at times, but it also fueled my determination to succeed and break down barriers for other women of color in similar roles.

These struggles have not only shaped me but have also fueled my passion for empowering others, particularly women and those from underrepresented communities. Each challenge has been a lesson in resilience, and I carry these experiences with pride, sabiendo que si se pudo, y que si se puede si uno quiere.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Today, I stand here driven by the spark ignited in me as an eight-year-old girl, captivated by the world of fashion and creative expression. The Bratz doll franchise, with its bold approach to style, diversity, and attitude, significantly influenced my early interests. Its impact on the doll industry’s traditional norms resonated with me, and I’ve carried that inspiration with me. These experiences have prepared me well for my current endeavors, and I’m confident that Miami is just the place. The city offers such an environment that is welcoming to all cultures and celebrates diversity.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Based off personal experience, to achieve success there are several key qualities that are essential like being humble. Recognizing one’s limitations and being open to learning from others is extremely crucial. Humility allows growth in mindset, allowing for continuous improvement and adaptability. A strong work ethic is another great quality for success, it demonstrates commitment and resilience as well as building relationships with like-minded individuals can lead to valuable connections, mentorship, and opportunities. However, the characteristic that will set you apart from the rest is your curiosity. The continuous drive to want to learn. Pursuing knowledge and self-improvement through ongoing education and training is essential for staying competitive.
