Today we’d like to introduce you to Nanyamka Smith-Thomas.
Hi Nanyamka, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a passion for creating since I was a kid. As I got older, I came to the realization that I was very handy and creative. I blindly inherited this gift from my father and his father. I started out creating things for family and friends. After the passing of my baby brother, I was fired from my job. Soon after, I launched “Decor Akil”. I named my business in memory of him, Akil is his middle. Today I’m able to continue the work I do with the support from everyone that’s been in my corner from day one.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely been a bumpy road. Nothing that’s meant to last never comes easy. Not having enough of money to start how I would like had me in the beginning. Managing time and delegating tasks was a major issue until I got organized and set time aside for anything that needed to be done.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I provide design services for anything, whether it’s for a gift or a wedding. I’m known for personalizing any item you can think of and bring those ideas to life. I’m proud of all of the work I do because if I don’t feel like it’s up to my standards, it won’t see the light of day. Having integrity and being able to deliver under strenuous situations. Those are my superpowers.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I wouldn’t call it luck but I am grateful for everything good or bad that has happened for me. Lessons learned from them both.
