Rising Stars: Meet Mo Diaz of Cutler Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mo Diaz.

Hi Mo, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started drawing as a child, even before I could write. Born in Homestead, Florida, I lived there until I was 12, then we moved to South Texas, where my dad’s family is from. That’s where I saw my first lowrider, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I began studying the artwork and paint jobs on those cars and trucks. During my teenage years, I went through some difficult times with drugs and a rebellious attitude. We moved back to Homestead in 2000, and I had a few jobs working on boats and in body shops. However, I always wanted to create custom art, so every day after work, I would practice and hone my skills. After a few years, I decided to work for myself in 2010 and never looked back. We started with cars and trucks, but then a friend asked me to paint a custom motorcycle in my style. I took the opportunity to showcase my work to the motorcycle world. Since then, I’ve strived to make my name and attention to detail stand out. Even after appearing in over 25 magazines, having my paint jobs on world-title pieces, and in museums, I still feel like I did on the first day. None of that truly matters to me; keeping my customers happy and bringing smiles to people’s faces is more important than anything else. Everything else is just a bonus.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been easy coming from nothing. I had no money, no backup, and hardly any support, relying solely on my raw talent. I essentially started in the backyard of my parents’ old apartment. Struggling to find enough work to survive was very depressing at times. The longer I’ve been in this, the more I’ve seen how people truly are behind closed doors. I’ve experienced a lot of so-called friends who took advantage of my situation.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My team and I specialize in custom art and motorcycle customization, whether it’s a new bike someone wants to personalize or full frame-off builds – we do it all. We’re known for a unique lowrider-style paint job and our attention to detail sets us apart. We’re most proud of serving our customers and delivering exactly what they desire, awards are a nice bonus!

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
i feel like the industry is always changing the way the world is now most people will follow a trend then move to another just like they scroll through their phones i also feel from my prespective that its very watered down now theres not as much quality anymore or attention to detail thats why we keep a very tight grip on the way we operate and the type of work that we do
