Today we’d like to introduce you to Melrose Bessenroth.
Hi Melrose, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started in the beauty industry in 2001, really by fluke. I was a classically trained dancer, looking for a new outlet for creativity. A friend of mine, who was a hairdresser in Los Angeles, told me I should try working in the hair industry, and that she thought I would enjoy it. I was young and bold enough to make a huge switch….
I fell in love, I fell in love with the culture, the creativity, the clients, and the flow of it all. I dove head first. I started apprenticing as soon as I received my license. I had the opportunity to work under some amazingly talented hairdressers who helped shape me into the stylist I am today.
Fast forward to the present day, I’m currently working at Salon Margrit on Palm Beach Island, a staple salon that has been around for 40 years. The owner Margrit Bessenroth is my mother-in-law, an amazing German immigrant who created a legacy. She is a true inspiration and I’m blessed to create in a place with family.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think anything worthwhile has its challenges and obstacles. Hairdressing is a very technical skill, it takes a lot of practice and messing up to learn. I can remember when I was in my training class and we were learning about a specific haircut called the graduated bob.
This haircut is all about your body position and how you hold the hair at a specific angle, well I totally messed up my model’s haircut and had to have the educator fix it for me, I was so upset. I thought I would never get that haircut down, but now it’s my favorite haircut to do.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in Great Lengths hair extensions, and although I do cut and color most clients find me for my extension work. It’s a keratin tip extension with a very small bond… all my tones are pre-blended and cut down for a custom extension. It’s some of my best work.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
