Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlene Forand.
Hi Marlene, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started out in the film, television and print industry as a wardrobe stylist and then quickly became an art director. I have been behind the camera for thirty years. 15 years ago I began shooting because getting samples from national and international clients were impossible. I like to refer to myself as advertising without the agency as I have filled many roles successfully and have some pretty big brands under my belt. My website is somewhat of a biography.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road is never easy unless you’re in the right camp! Work ethics and culture have changed therefore the “old school” method of getting it right the first time (which is all in the prep) doesn’t really ring true. Cell phones are good for a certain purpose but everyone with a phone seems to think they are photographers. Many other aspects go into capturing a great shot. I have been referred to as a swiss army knife as I have been on set as a food stylist and then the make=up artist doesn’t show up and I’m able to fill that void as well. The work is always rewarding….the business an ever changing challenge.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am one of a very few food photographers who indeed are bona fide food stylist, art director, editor and producer. My hands have touched many different industries in addition to food and beverage. I have done healthcare, banks and finance, pharmaceuticals, lifestyle, resorts, travel and anything in between. Just being a technician is not enough…you must have talent, passion and soul.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Don’t believe everything you hear and never stop learning!
