Rising Stars: Meet Mariana Velez of Miami / South Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariana Velez.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been entrepreneurial, even as a little girl I was constantly creating things, starting little businesses just for fun. Fashion was always the thread running through everything. It’s what I studied, what I understood instinctively, and where I felt most creatively alive.
In 2018, I launched my fashion brand, Gaia. But very quickly I realized I wasn’t just selling clothes. I was building entire worlds around them. I styled every look, directed shoots, chose the accessories, locations, models, everything. Without fully realizing it, I was already doing my true purpose.
But even as the brand grew, I went through a very personal moment of feeling lost. From the outside everything looked successful, yet internally I felt disconnected and unsure of what I truly wanted. I was in that search frustrated. Then someone asked me: “What would you do for free for the rest of your life?” I had to sit with it. But when the answer came, it was styling. And suddenly everything made sense.
Shortly after, I applied for an O-1 extraordinary talent visa and moved to Miami. Today I’m building my career in the United States as a stylist and creative…and I feel like this is only the beginning.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
2. You’ve built businesses since you were very young. Do you remember the first moment you realized you had an entrepreneurial mindset?

I honestly think it was always part of me. I loved creating things and finding ways to turn ideas into something tangible. As a child I would come up with businesses constantly, from selling lemonade to making jewelry and paintings. I was never afraid to try things, and I think that curiosity became one of the biggest reasons I’ve been able to reinvent myself throughout my life.

3. Many people struggle with finding their purpose. What did finding yours feel like?

Frustrating, honestly… for a long time. I was in that search, feeling lost and a little desperate, when someone I was talking to about purpose asked me: “What would you do for free for the rest of your life?” and that question stopped me in my tracks. I had to sit with it. But when the answer came, it was styling. And suddenly everything started to make sense, because it had already been present throughout my whole journey…. I just hadn’t fully acknowledged it yet.
Styling doesn’t drain me, it energizes me. I lose track of time when I’m working. That told me everything.

4. Your work as a stylist feels very emotional and personal. What does styling mean to you beyond fashion?

To me, The true magic of style isn’t in the clothes, it’s in how they make you feel. It’s not only about clothing… it’s about identity, confidence, and emotion. I love helping people reconnect with a version of themselves they may have forgotten or haven’t fully stepped into yet.

The most powerful thing is seeing someone’s energy shift when they feel truly seen. Fashion can change how someone enters a room, how they carry themselves, how they express who they are without speaking. That emotional connection is what makes styling so meaningful to me.

5. Gaia became known for its strong visual identity. What did building that brand teach you?

It taught me patience and trust in evolution. People often think successful brands are born with a perfectly clear identity, but Gaia took years to fully become what it was meant to be. I experimented constantly and it wasn’t until years later that I found what truly defined it: “Shiny season is all year long.” That became the brand’s DNA, and once I found it, everything clicked.
That journey taught me that clarity is created through movement. You don’t need to know everything from the beginning. Sometimes the only thing you need to do is keep going.

6. You made the decision to move to Miami and pursue your career in the United States. What did that transition represent for you personally?

It represented belief in myself. Moving countries and starting over takes courage because you leave behind comfort, familiarity, and certainty. But I knew that if I truly believed in my vision, I had to give myself the opportunity to expand beyond what felt safe.

Miami became a symbol of a new chapter for me, one where I stopped doubting my purpose and fully stepped into it. And honestly? I love it here. This city has given me so much energy and inspiration… this feeling of happiness tells me I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.

7. What do you think makes your creative perspective unique?

I think my greatest strength is my essence and the emotional energy I bring into every project. Of course, technical skills and experience matter, but people remember how you make them feel.

I want every person I work with to feel celebrated, confident, and fully themselves. My approach to styling is very intuitive and human.

8. What would you say to someone who feels pressure to have everything figured out?

I would say that nobody truly has everything figured out. We evolve constantly. I think people put so much pressure on themselves (including me of course) to find one perfect answer immediately, but life doesn’t work that way.

Be curious. Try things. Allow yourself to change directions. Every experience teaches you something about yourself, even the ones that don’t work out. Your path becomes clearer by moving, not by waiting for certainty.
