Rising Stars: Meet Leonardo Vicario

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Leonardo Vicario.

Leonardo Vicario

Hi Leonardo, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
After moving to Florida in 2016, I continued to pursue photography, gradually honing my skills and expanding my portfolio. Despite the challenges of being a freelance artist, I persisted, driven by my passion for capturing meaningful moments and telling stories through images. Each project taught me something new, whether it was about technical aspects of photography, client management, or the business side of the industry.

As I navigated through various opportunities and challenges, I never lost sight of the invaluable lessons I learned during my studies in communication and marketing back in Brazil. Those early experiences shaped my perspective on photography as a visual art form and a powerful medium for social commentary and reflection.

Over the years, I’ve continued to refine my craft, embracing new technologies and techniques while staying true to my artistic vision. While the journey hasn’t always been easy, each step forward has brought me closer to realizing my potential as a photographer.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue exploring new avenues of creativity and pushing the boundaries of my art. Despite the uncertainties that come with life as an artist, I remain committed to my passion for photography and the endless possibilities it offers for self-expression and connection.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey of pursuing photography as a career hasn’t been smooth sailing. It’s been riddled with challenges and hurdles that have tested my determination.

One of the toughest struggles has been battling my inner doubts and fears. As an artist, exposing your thoughts and emotions through your work can be both empowering and terrifying. There’s a nagging question of whether my work is good enough, whether it will resonate with others, and whether it can truly stand out among countless other artists.

Another major challenge has been finding my unique style and voice in a crowded field of photographers. Simply being skilled with a camera isn’t enough; I’ve had to delve deep into my creativity to innovate and experiment, striving to carve out a niche that is distinctly mine.

Despite these obstacles, my passion for photography remains unwavering. Each setback fuels my determination to push forward and grow as an artist. While I know there are more challenges ahead, I’m prepared to face them head-on, armed with my camera and a steadfast commitment to my craft.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I would say that my focus in photography navigates between two main areas: fashion and art. During these years living in Florida, I’ve had the pleasure of photographing for various Brazilian and American magazines.

There’s nothing quite like seeing your work published on a magazine cover. I enjoy the idea of being a communicator of ideas, striving to bring beauty and creativity to people. On the other hand, I feel that my work should be connected to art somehow. I’m very fond of museums, exhibitions, and alternative photography, and I would like to venture into the world of fine art with some of my pieces. I believe that being an artist means constantly rediscovering and renewing oneself internally. We reinvent ourselves with each project.

I think one of my unique aspects is that I find it easy to work with different professionals simultaneously, and I believe it’s important that everyone has equal creative weight during the shoot. I enjoy listening to advice, sharing ideas, and offering input. In my view, fashion photography is a collaborative creation aimed at achieving a final goal.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Of course, I cannot think about my career without considering a list of people who propelled me. My family is certainly the foundation of everything. I grew up in a household that inspired me towards art.

My mom is a teacher, my grandad was a musician, and my grandma was a tailor, creating a wonderful environment for an artist to flourish. Additionally, I had an important mentor, Eduardo Marcelo Leite, who taught me the art of photography. He is an amazing photographer who travels across Latin America, capturing truly impactful pictures.
