Rising Stars: Meet Krystal Cabrera of South Gate

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Cabrera.

Hi Krystal, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Whipped Bakeshop originated from a passion for baking I began in 2017 after a knee surgery. During recovery, baking was what comforted me during helpless times. It became an outlet of creativity for me, which I later began implementing into my work as a behavioral therapist. I thought if this helped me focus and be in the moment, it may just do the same for others. That was until Covid hit, and our clinics were forced to shut down. That was the one thing that pushed me to start publicly posting my creations and get noticed. Family and friends gladly supported, and word-of-mouth quickly got around when anyone would be in need of sweets for a special day.

I quickly realized I would need to organize myself and the overflow of messages I was receiving. That was when I took baking far more seriously and decided to get my food handler’s license and all certifications necessary to be able to sell out of my home. I was so very grateful for the outcome. I went from doing simple birthday and dessert tables to lavish sweet 16 cakes ,wedding cakes, and even micro-catering. As a baker, I pride myself on my from-scratch recipes and fresh ingredients, and it’s an amazing feeling to bring something more personal and custom to any special event. That is what Whipped Bakeshop is all about.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been an easy journey, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. I’m constantly learning and growing as I go. There have been days when I’ve felt like giving up, overworked myself, or faced some kind of setback, but I always try to stay calm and see the light at the end of the tunnel. Seeing the results of my work is always a huge relief, haha.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in cakes and pastries for various occasions. My most fulfilling moments are our annual fundraising event for autism awareness, which takes place every April. For the past four years, all proceeds have gone towards classroom necessities, and it’s a wonderful experience to be a part of and contribute to such a cause. I’m also incredibly proud of the wedding cakes I’ve had the opportunity to create. It’s always gratifying to witness my vision and my customers’ dreams come to life, and I feel honored to be a part of such a special moment in life.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I took a significant financial risk by starting my business, despite not knowing what to expect. Surprisingly, my first year went exceptionally well. Sometimes, you can’t get far without taking risks. You just have to trust your gut instincts and the people who support you and your dream to get you far.
