Rising Stars: Meet KenJra of Dania Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to KenJra.

Hi KenJra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m originally from Gainesville, Florida, and began singing at the age of four. As a child, I was deeply inspired by the TV show Showtime at the Apollo, which sparked my passion for music. At age seven, my family moved to South Florida, where we faced significant hardships, including periods of homelessness.

By the time I was 16, our situation had stabilized, and I took a major step toward my dream by auditioning for American Idol in Miami. Although I didn’t make it far in the competition, the experience only fueled my determination to pursue a career in music.

I began performing with a Christian band, singing at church and various events for about ten years. Eventually, I felt called to explore my own voice and vision as a solo artist. Since then, I’ve been writing, recording, and sharing my music as an independent artist.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yes money was always an obstacle for me. The paperwork side of things and studio time were difficult as a single mother of 4 at the time. I also didn’t have the right team and no solid direction for a long time but that has recently changed within the past 2 years.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At the same time I auditioned for American Idol at 16, my mother was able to invest in my modeling and acting career. I began taking classes to hone my craft, which included dance lessons. That year, I walked in my first fashion show and also started doing theater.

Now, at 33, I’m still actively modeling and acting, continuing to pursue both passions alongside my other creative endeavors.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Yes. Networking is everything I would say that taking classes to better your craft is always a plus . You meet all kinds of people that may be able to help you in your journey for what you’re tried to accomplish. That worked for me as well as social media. Reaching out to others that are in the industry and not being afraid to do things I’ve never done before.
