Rising Stars: Meet Keilah Ayum of South Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keilah Ayum.

Hi Keilah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
How I started… well, it’s been quite a journey. I’d say my creative path really began around 2020, though photography was my first love since I was a kid. I’ve always enjoyed taking pictures and capturing moments. When I was sent home early from college due to COVID, that’s when everything truly started to take shape.

I began modeling, and my family gifted me my first camera — that’s when I created my first photography page, Name The Shooter, where I began sharing my work. Looking back, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly how it all came together. I just stayed curious and trusted that God would guide the way. I didn’t have any prior experience; I simply followed what inspired me — vlogging, modeling, photography, writing — and, thankfully, people connected with it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think any path is a perfectly smooth road. The biggest struggle, for me, is continuing to believe in yourself. Things can be going right or completely off track, but as a creative, you don’t really have a choice — you have to keep reflecting, learning, and pushing yourself to grow. You’re constantly questioning your art and your purpose. The world can be a tough critic, but at the end of the day, it’s your own belief that either keeps you moving forward or stops you entirely.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Right now, I’m focusing on filmmaking—specifically directing and screenwriting. I say “right now” because I tend to do a little bit of everything, and who knows where life will take me in the next few years. I’m not entirely sure what I’m known for, but probably for directing my recent film Almost a Star and my short film series Everything’s Fine, which I both directed and wrote.

I’m proud of everything I’ve accomplished so far. I never would’ve imagined being where I am today—it’s been surreal to witness it all come together.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I feel like the industry’s becoming a lot more open and community-driven. There’s this shift toward real, raw storytelling– we even see it in fashion or lifestyle campaigns. People want to feel something again. And it’s beautiful seeing more women behind the camera now, not just in front of it. Female filmmakers and creative directors are really shaping the next wave of what storytelling looks like.
